Margaret Workman Brand born 1933, as in MarieCeleste's post above, married in 1956.
But her husband was Edgar Anton Meaten:-

The only other 1956 Scottish marriage of a Margaret Brand was to a Robert Paterson:-

ScotlandsPeople has no record of a Margaret Brand marrying a William Johnstone (or variant spelling) 1940-60.

Searching for M Brand marrying William Johnstone (or variant) 1950-60 only produces one result, which is presumably not the right couple:

Scottish birth certs also give the date and place of parents' marriage.

Scottish marriage certs include the names of both parents........if known, of course.

You can't hope to make progress on this without buying at least one cert....................

How do you know the exact date of the marriage to Johnstone?

Would they be the ones that MC posted earlier?

Out of interest, how did you work out that the regs are for the same person (always willing to listen and learn!)

As there are no results of a Margaret marrying a William Johnstone in England in 1956, presumably that also occurred in Scotland.

Not knowing in detail about the info on Scottish certs, would it be cheaper and more reliable to purchase Margaret and William's MC, or to pay for one of the BC's?

Only one person called Margaret Brand was born in Scotland in 1933.
Birth was registered in St Andrew, Dundee,.

( an SP search for 1933 will show 2 birth entries.
One in Dundee the other in Angus but it is the same birth as both lead to a registration in St Andrew, Dundee)

Were did Margaret marry? If you bought the MC, an English cert would give the father's name if known....and the details of the mother if its a Scottish MC.

Even with just the father's name, it might be possible to look for a marriage in Scotland (presumably) to a Mary by elimination.

Similarly a 1987 Scottish DC will give far more info than an English one. You'd probably have to send for it rather than purchase and download.

I checked on SP.
Only one person called Mary Brand died in Scotland in 1987.
The death was registered in Midlothian but the death index states she was 70yrs old.

This woman was born circa 1917.

I'm afraid I don't know any more than I originally posted. I imagine Brand was Mary's married name, not her maiden name.

Are you saying that Margaret's mother did not marry?

If she was born Mary Brand, you should be able to find her on the 1901 Scottish census on Ancestry.

If Margaret married in Scotland, the cert will contain info about her parents..............

Thank you for your quick reply.. Only started searching this part of the family tree a few days a go and was disappointed that I couldn't use Ancestry.com! Will have a look on Scotlandspeople.gov.uk as you suggested.
Margaret had two brothers called Terry & Jim and two sisters called Eileen & Jean but apart from that I know very little.
