Thank you all for your replies. I have the information up to the 1871 census, but was unable to find any of the family on the 1881. I have the record of Robert registered in 1880 but he was born on 22nd December 1879, a copy of his birth certificate was copied dated 1902.
We had a rumour that John went to Canada so the Canada link from yourselves had helped tremendously. If any one has any more information about the later years in Canada as we also had a rumour that he may have married again?
The results of Ann and Robert I do have the information after the 1891census and the death of Ann in 1905.

I still think that the 91 census that I posted is the right one. The coincidence of 2 brothers with the correct first names, correct dates of birth, born England and living in Mantoba has to be them despite the mis-spelling of the surname.

As for Mr. Morrison not sounding French, I remember a high school teacher by the name of Angus MacKenzie, a French Canadian whose English was very poor. A reason I suspected the enumerator was French was that if they were asked to spell the name the letter G in french sounds like J. I'm assuming the name Gent is pronounced as in "gentle".

Re: your related note. As a born & bred Yorkshireman I would consider it a disability to be born in Lancashire.

Margee - the 1891 enumerator was Mr Morrison, which doesn't sound particularly French to me. It also doesn't sound particularly like a Co Durham name either, so no doubt he did feel the need for a translator.

On a related note, I was browsing a mid 19th-cent census of a Durham mining village when I stumbled across a family - their place of birth (Lancashire) was listed in the disability col for the family.

I think this could be the brothers in 1891 in Canada. He's with John Jaent aged 36 also born England.

1891 Census of Canada
about Richard Jaent Name: Richard Jaent
Gender: Male
Marital Status: Married
Age: 23
Birth Year: abt 1868
Birthplace: England
Relation to Head of House: Head

French Canadian: No
Father's Birth Place: England
Mother's Birth Place: England
Province: Manitoba
District Number: 7

Richard Jaent 23

I'm presuming the enumerator was French speaking hence the mis-spelling of the name.

No second forename on the marriage record..........but as he'd abandoned his family, changes in his details are not surprising
