Surely it's got to be this death (deaths are registered in the area they occurred, not the area of residence):

Deaths Dec 1920 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DIXON William 35 Newcastle T. 10b 102

Well finally I have found it.. after man hours and wrong certificate.. and lots of help from you guys...

now I have him on Parish Records...
buried 7/10/1920 35 years old.
St Thomas Eighton Bank Durham
Last known address is Wakes Yard Wrekenton Row which matchs the census records...

But my question is why cant I find his death\?????

Thanks Kim, the link worked fine.

The only other thing I can think of is an electoral roll check, but the problem is these can only be searched locally and by address. You should have an address from your nan's birth certificate, it could be worth getting it checked out to see who was living there.

There were no ERs done for 1916 or 1917, but they started again in 1918, when men over 21 and women over 30 were elegible to vote, so both William & Margaret would have been eligible if they were still around. There are also the absent voters lists for 1918/19 which cover servicemen not at home.

The ERs for Gateshead are held at the Durham County records office, the absent voters list for Gateshead is also held at Gateshead library. They run a research service (for a fee), but the details are here:

http://www.durhamrecordoffice.org.uk/Pages/ApplyforResearchService.aspx

Otherwise it's a long wait until they release the 1921 census.

Strange co-incidence, I'm from Barrow and it's not really very near Carlisle. Back then they were in 2 different counties - Carlisle was in Cumberland and Barrow was in Lancashire!

Have you got a link to that war forces website please, it's not one I've used in the past?

Kim Annette Report 28 Dec 2013 17:52

I used war forces.. using the service number that Shirley provided.. it shows where born and where lived.. l looked up barrow in furness cause I didn't know where that was....

I know what u mean. sometimes when I check things I cant find them again....

Flip Report 28 Dec 2013 17:08

OK just got the record from ancestry, strange because I searched with the exact death date earlier and got nothing!

Flip

Flip Report 28 Dec 2013 17:05

Where did you find the record that he was born Barrow in Furness?

Kim Annette

Kim Annette Report 28 Dec 2013 16:56

I just looked into the William Dixon that died in the war.. service number 37097.. definitely not my William... this one was born in barrow in furness which is near Carlisle......so we are back at the beginning again....

Has your dad any memories of Robert & William that may lead to their marriages/children? - it's just with them being older than Ellen they may have spoken to their descendants about their father. Trouble is, their names are too common to trace any subsequent families with any certainty unless your dad can give you more on them.

Kim Annette

Kim Annette Report 28 Dec 2013 14:04

I found it... wow... thanks for that... dad remembers Robert and Freddie.. he remembers and a funny story regarding William so that would fit in...

Kim Annette

Kim Annette Report 28 Dec 2013 14:01

flip...I have Robert and ellen I don't have the William 1914.... where did u find that?????... I will look now as well.. that name would also fit in with my dad's very vague family history memories...

William/Margaret did not have any children on 1911 census, but it looks like 2 were born before Ellen - Robert 1913 & William 1914. Then there was a gap to Ellen, it could indicate he wasn't around - was like you say at war - hence no children in between, and there were none after Ellen.

I still think the most likely theory is he died during WW1, and Shirley's death is the only one I can see which goes with your information that he was a driver.

Kim Annette

Kim Annette Report 28 Dec 2013 13:49

yes dec 1919......

Kim Annette

Kim Annette Report 28 Dec 2013 13:49

hhhhmmmmmmmm........... Margaret may have been keeping company with Freddie a lot earlier than the records suggest.......

Flip

Flip Report 28 Dec 2013 13:46

If the WW1 death found by Shirley is your William, then either there was a very long pregnancy or your g.grandmother was not his - I see she was registered in quarter 1 of 1920, so I assume born in December 1919.

I've checked National archives for a divorce for Margaret, but there's nothing showing - so I assume William was already dead??

Shirley.... you could be so right.... maybe they separated she had an affair... had freddy... first husband died/disappeared she married the first freddy... and when nan married he had actually died...
when I thought the 1927 death was his I did notice that he died she remarried and Freddie turned up VERY quickly and it crossed my mind that he could have been either Williams or the first fred....
naughty nan......
I think another purchase of her second marriage cert may have to be the way to go... or just live with it....and speculate... :-S :-S
