Don't worry, Eunice, I didn't go out of my way, had to do a little shopping, the library was on my way. We have a wonderful staff at our library, they go out of their way to help so it was a pleasure.

And don't worry about my name spelling, actually I'm Margaret but when I was choosing a board name they wouldn't let me use Margaret, Marg or Margie because they were already in use so I decided on Margee because nobody else had that name.

Just found a link to HMCS Gloucester and it mention a Jack Whittingham - I checked the previous article as it said Jack was in the navy. Sadly the URL is no longer there.

Where was Thomas Trumbull from? There area few Turnbulls in this area of west lancashire.

MargaretM Report 10 Feb 2014 23:24

My Thomas Turnbull was born in Ingleton, Durham and died in Scaling, Yorkshire. His parents and grandparents were also from Durham. I'd like to trace him back to Scotland because I know there was a border clan of Turnbulls but I'm at the proverbial dead-end.

Can't leave this one. Is this the death of John Watson's wife Yvonne?

http://www.federationgenealogie.qc.ca/avisdeces/avis/pdf?id=79065

It mentions children, grandchildren and great grandchildren in New Brunswick, Texas and California.

Here is the MAJOR in Ottawa as CAPT JOHN of the Royal Canadian and Mechanical Engineers so that ties him to John Watson as well.

http://www.newspapers.com/newspage/48459351/

-----------
and here he is listed as MAJOR J W Whittingham of Sherbourne AVE

http://www.newspapers.com/newspage/44472049/

---------------
and here as MAJOR with Yvonne - article about their house and garden

http://www.newspapers.com/newspage/42530909/
--------------

The Major was quite the horticulturist:

http://www.newspapers.com/newspage/44472049/
--------------

In 1971 he was referred to as simply John W Whittingham - no MAJOR in his son's wedding announcement:

http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1946&dat=19710118&id=-o4zAAAAIBAJ&sjid=l6EFAAAAIBAJ&pg=2271,4425057
----------
And here is Yvonne's obit listing him as JACK - notice the names of the children are the same as mentioned in the article re their home

http://www.federationgenealogie.qc.ca/avisdeces/avis/pdf?id=79065

Interestingly, Yvonne's obituary was in both an Ottawa newspaper and a Kingston, Ontario newspaper and the funeral service was held at a Kingston funeral home. None of her children lived there. Kingston is about a 2 hr drive from Ottawa.
------------

Of course none of this proves that the John WW in Maple Grove is the same man but you'd wonder how many John W Whittinghams there could be in the Ottawa area at the time. I'd feel more comfortable saying it was the same man if it had MAJOR on his marker :-) and if we had another later address for him other than Sherbourne but I can find nothing more recent. Maple Grove Cemetery is not a great distance from his Sherbourne home address in the '60's but there are closer cemeteries and I'd wonder why he was buried there in 1982, except that it is one of our older cemeteries. Maple Grove would be considered to be in a suburb of Ottawa. It is about a 15 min drive away from the Sherbourne address.
