Have put your message on here Judy as there are a lot of people with far more experience/knowledge than I have, who could possibly help you more..

Hi Misty,
The witnesses at EMILY,S marriage were JOHN MASON & JANE BENSON or BENSAN, the information regarding EMILY,S father is JAMES SPENCE, occupation Watchmaker, and there is no mention about being deceased.
A old Aunt of mine has said that according to old family gossip EMILY,S mother (name unknown) was in service at ALLERTON HALL (now Allerton Castle) and she had some kind of a liason with the owners son any EMILY was the result, so maybe EMILY was Illegitimate after all.
Best wishes,
Judy

Hi Misty,
The TOM FOSTER b. 1892 that you found is not on the 1901 or 1911 census but there is a death of a THOMAS FOSTER at Camberwell in 1895 aged three, so I am assuming it is the same person.

Mary

Mary Report 18 Feb 2014 09:06

Allerton Hall/Castle was demolished in 1843 when they started to rebuild but stopped in 1856 due to lack of funds.
So would Emily's mum have been there at the right time??

EMILY & ROBERT had a daughter named MARGARET FOSTER b, 1888, MARGARET married WILLIAM JOHN GIBSON in 1908 at Southwark, I have search the 1911 census for this couple and I cannot seem to find them, MARGARET was also known as MILLIE and I was wondering if their names had been misspelt, can anyone kindly help me find them? I believe WILLIAM was born in Deptford London around 1882.
Thank you.
Judy

I assume this is the marriage you mean, Judy.

Marriages Mar 1908 (>99%)
Foster Margaret Camberwell 1d 953
GIBSON William John Camberwell 1d 953

Do you have the cert, to be sure she's the right Margaret?
Though it looks likely, as the Fosters were in Camberwell in 1901.

ArgyllGran Report 25 Feb 2014 12:49

1901 census says she was born c1888 in Lower Edmonton, Middlesex, so this would be her birth, but it's a few years out from the marriage cert, so William's YOB may be equally suspect:

Births Sep 1889 (>99%)
Foster Margaret Edmonton 3a 277

EDIT: 1891 census says she was born c1883 in Birmingham. The only feasible birth to match that would be this one:
Births Sep 1883 (>99%)
FOSTER Margaret Eliza Aston 6d 246

It's interesting that the Foster family is recorded as Gibson in the 1881 census (posted on page 1 of this thread).

Did they have these children
Edmund Gibson O/N/D 1911 nee foster
Margaret 1913

No sign of either of them in 1911.

I am not sure if MARGARET & WILLIAM had any children we were hoping that we could locate them on the 1911 census, but it looks as if they were left off for some reason.
We also noticed the the FOSTER family were listed as GIBSON on the 1881 census and we are very puzzled about that !!

Judy
