Have you looked at all the information given above. If the Gladys you are looking for had a father named Herbert then I think the information we have given is correct.

Gladys was born 1907 with the surname Ellis (her mother's first married name)

She was then known as Gladys Irene Pigden (her mother married Herbert William Pigden just a few months after Gladys was born).

When Gladys married she gave both Ellis and Pigden as her surname (perhaps she was unsure as she had half-siblings with the Ellis surname)

She died in 1992 as Gladys Irene Bell in Grimsby.

Do you think any of this could be correct for the Gladys you are looking for?

Edward her father died in 1883.

The Gladys Pigden I would like is not g farrow who is my cousin I got the info on Gladys Irene Pigden from a Eward Webster. Of hot matches. I've tried b d m to no avail. I did not know who she was until Mr Webster wrote me .

So MarieCeleste is correct. Gladys was only young when Herbert died and as she had siblings (or half-siblings) called Ellis perhaps she wasn't sure what name she should give at her marriage.

This would suggest that Herbert William Pigden WAS the father of Gladys.

Good summary Kath! Yes, I think the fact that she's listed as daughter on the 1911 whereas the two lads are listed as stepsons confirms the paternity.

The name she gave for her father in 1930 seems to be a jumble of her mother's first and second husbands. If both were long dead then she may not have remembered correctly.

Caroline Louisa's maiden name was Wright which she has written on the 1911 census and crossed out.

She married George Ellis on 6 Dec 1896 her fathers name is Edward David Wright a Beachman and Georges father is George Ellis a Basket Maker.

This is from a tree on Ancestry and she has the marriage cert on there but she says

She was 19yrs and He was 21yrs.

It actually reads he was 27 and she was 24!!!!!!!!!!!

To be fair to the transcriber on the 1911 census the writing isn't the best.

So - Gladys Irene was born in the September quarter of 1907, just before her mother married for a second time to Herbert William Pigden.

She was given the surname that her mother had at the time (Ellis) and afterwards was known by her step-father's name (Pigden) - although it is possible that Herbert William was actually her father.

I've just found a version of the Webster family tree on Ancestry - it has

Herbert William Pigden abt1883 - 1912, married 1907 to
Caroline Louisa Wright 1872 to 1959

It does also say that Caroline Louisa Wright married George Edward Ellis in 1895.

So that 1930 marriage does look like a connection.

Have to say though, that the tree is totally unsourced so not reliable. It also has no mention whatsoever of a marriage to a Brusch (or anything remotely similar)

EDIT: - I see Mary must have found it too.
