The 2 children born to Hugh Iddon and Jane Manddrell were both born in Dalton in Furness - Isabella Jane in 1868 and Amy Margaret in 1872 - see this site, it records mmm:

http://www.cumbriabmd.org.uk/cgi/birthind.cgi

I think if you look at the site they had another child John William in 1874. Dalton is strange, sometimes it comes under Ulverston registration district and sometimes Barrow.

Added, sorry this third child should read William John.

The father could, of course, have been invented.

Normally, one would have expected his daughter to record his death in the same way as her mother's.................

If Jane was married to Will, the odds are that her birth name was NOT Maddrell

Unknown

Unknown Report 8 May 2014 16:08

The Jane Maddrell (not, I believe, directly related to the above mentioned Catherine) I'm looking for was born IOM About 1814 (Sources:Family Bible and Burial records). Her daughter also a Jane (born between 1834 and 1837) married Hugh Iddon (11 Jul 1866 Braddan - Jane's father shown as Will Maddrell) and subsequently moved to Belfast with him. I believe the Isabella Jane Iddon (Born Ulverston, Lancs) mentioned in the Bible (below) was their daughter. They also had another daughter - Amy Margaret born 1871 in Barrow-in-Furness.

The Family Bible published 1856 which I believe must have belonged to Jane Maddrell/Iddon has the following inscription:- " My dear mother died Nov 17th 1868 Jane Maddrell. Isabella Jane Idden died August 5th 1868.

I have established that Jane (born Abt 1814) was interred at K K Braddan Cemetry. The Kirk Bradden burial registers, indexed and transcribed by the Isle of Man Family History Society, contain the following relevant entries: Plot 2171 - MADDRELL, Jane, age 54, of Douglas, buried 20 Nov 1868, IDDON, Isabella Jane, age 7 mos, of Douglas, buried 09 Aug 1868.

I am struggling to find a Jane (Maddrell) aged about 20 who married a Will Maddrell and had a daughter Jane Maddrell/Iddon between 1834 and 1837. (Jane Maddrell/Iddon's age in 1901 Belfast Census is recorded as 64 - therefore born Abt 1837. Jane Iddon's age on death in Belfast in 1927 recorded as 93 - therefore born 1834.)

Any help you might be able to give would be very welcome.

ArgyllGran - Yes Robert was born in Strathan - parents Roderick Mcleod and Isabella McKenzie. Robert's occupation is recorded as Seaman Steward Merchant Service in 1871 on his daughter Margaret Anne McKenziee McLeod's birth register entry. I have always thought that this indicated a passenger ship rather than fishing boat - but I could be wrong!! Thanks again for you help

This is more likely him in 1851. Can't see him in 1861 - perhaps he was at sea:

Re Robert, the seaman steward -

for generations it has been very common for young men from the west Highland coast and islands to join the Merchant Navy.

If I've got the right Robert in censuses, he started out as a fisherman, so would have been used to the sea. [EDIT: No, not necessarily - see my edit below re 1861 census].

He may have met Catherine while still a fisherman, as he seems to have been in 1861. Fishing boats went all up and down the west coast, and Rushen, IOM,
is / was a fishing port.

This was my first request for help - bowled over by your speed of response and kindness in helping out. I have now found the image on Ancestry by searching for Esther Massell. I agree with your comments about the transcription - this is Catherine. Lessons learned - don't necessarily trust the transcriptions and I should have searched for Edward Gawne in the first place!! Thank you all again - I am most grateful.

PS: I am struggling with another Maddrell - this time a Jane. Can I ask about her here or should I ask separately in a new post?

Not the easiest job having to interpret the writing/abbreviations on the entry is it?

Unknown

Unknown Report 8 May 2014 12:01

Thank you all. Stuart has the correct Catherine. Here is the 1841 Census:-
1841, Rushen, district 5, page 12, Cross-e-Callig
William Maddrell, 50, tailor
Ann, 45
William, 25, agricultural labourer
Thomas, 20, tailor
James, 15
Ann, 14
Margaret, 12
John, 10
Edward, 7
Catherine, 5
Henry, 2

The marriage of Catherine to Robert McLeod (My Gt Gt grandfather) is correct. He was from Lochinver in Sutherland and was then a Seaman Steward. (No shipping link bewtween IOM and Lochinver found so far p(erhaps someone knows of one?)

The information about Catherine being in the household of Edward Gawne in 1861 was sent to me by Brian Lawson who ran a comprehensive IOM website.

:-D

greyghost

greyghost Report 8 May 2014 11:56

Think you've got it PH and AG - has Catherine been shortened to Cath ne with the ne slightly raised? Could easily be Maddrell as the surname.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 8 May 2014 11:50

I've posted that as well, PricklyHolly - and on having another look, I think Esther Massell is actually Cath (and a squiggle to denote an abbreviation) Maddrell.
