Re no sign of the arrival of John and Ellen Trigger in Australia
I see a family tree on Ancestry as them arriving 25/5/1853 Port Phillip Bay, Australia?

In 1893 women in New Zealand got the vote, so now we have:

New Zealand, Electoral Rolls, 1853-1981
Name: Jane Trigger
Electoral Year: 1896
District: Taranaki
Region or Province: Taranaki

She's listed next to John Trigger jr who is now a labourer.

As I said, there's no record of a marriage to a Jane, in fact that marriage to a Mary Johnson is the ONLY one that comes up for a John Trigger at all.

I can only suggest you ask the tree owner where they got that info.

ADDED:

Just had a look at the arrivals on those Ancestry trees to see if they had a source.

They did!! It was this -

Victoria, Australia, Assisted and Unassisted Passenger Lists, 1839–1923
Name: Mrs Saunders
Arrival Date: 25 May 1853
Arrival Port: Port Phillip Bay, Australia
Departure Port: Calcutta
Ship: Marlborough

Excuse me?

FURTHER ADD:

I see they also have John jnr arriving in 1853 with his parents but they have him born in 1854 (it's a Saunders record attached to that birth too).

Hi MarieCeleste
Thank you again for your time and help. I will spend more time going over all of the super data you have found for me and get back to you.

Ian - one thing about that marriage I found to a Mary Johnson, I strongly suspect that it was John Trigger snr who married her. There's a death for a Mary Trigger in 1885 aged 53, I think she'd be a bit old for the son! Ellen Trigger died 1871.

One good thing about the births on NZ BMD is that it gives the parent's first names on the index so you can glean a little info for free.

Looks like John and Jane had a LOT of children.

Hi Just starting to get my head around this family
Looks likely that after John seniors wife Ellen nee Rogers died in 1871 New Plymouth, Taranaki, New Zealand. He was remarried to a Mary Johnson in 1877 this Mary nee Johnson was born abt 1832 died 1885 Waitara New Zealand aged 53.
Young John was married to a Jane at some point in New Zealand one family give the date as 1875?

...in case it helps.... the 'National Library of NZ' (Auckland) (on-line) has an 'Ask Us' librarian service. They will check their records incl electoral rolls- past & present ...and possibly newspaper death notices.

Letters My Grandfather Wrote Me: Family Origins

In 1877 she married John Trigger, a brewer of New Plymouth...

(a google search john trigger new Zealand brings up above, from a book)

That's a good find Chris, it confirms the brewer references and the middle name of Newton for some children.

Full link for ease of reference http://goo.gl/gpPeOV

So mother and daughter married father and son, things click into place now. It's highly probable that John jnr and Jane married but the marriage never made it to the registers.

EDIT: Now found marriage record - see below

You're on a roll there Chris Ho!

Ian is going to end up with a much more accurate tree than the rest of the tripe on Ancestry and other trees seen on Google searches.

As Ian has access to Ancestry and enjoys the research he'll have no problem finding the 1853 marriage for Benjamin Johnson and Mary Newton to get further info on their fathers, as well as the 1861 census where they're in Dukinfield.

Have sent Ian the original image for this baptism

Diocese of Chester parish registers of baptisms c1538-1910

First name(s) JANE
Last name JOHNSON
Gender Female
Birth year 1856
Baptism date 30 Nov 1856
Baptism year 1856
Father's first name Benjamin
Father's last name Johnson
Mother's first name Mary
City or town CASTLE HALL
County Cheshire
Country England

It's correct as the details on the image match the 1861 census.

Hi
Ships log look up please.
A ship called VIXEN sailed from Melbourne to New Plymouth on 19 February 1855.

Could you please check to see if the Trigger family or pos Saunders family were on board this ship.
