Find Ancestors

Margaret, you are welcome - we all like a "chase".

Just wondering aloud (well in writing) I wonder if we should look more at the Canadian immigration record supplied earlier in the thread?

My reasoning behind this, some of my ancestors went to Canada around the same time, some were miners some stonemasons. There were adverts in local newspapers for the trades, and promises of riches and a good life. It didn't turn out that way.

Most of mine (but not all) came back after a short time (stonemasons couldn't work in the Canadian winter!) and the riches promised did not materialise for most of the miners - and they ended up in boarding houses/camps. One of my miners came back, served in WW1, got married and cleared off to Aus, but ultimately settled in NZ.

Just a thought :-)

All I can say is a tremendous thank you to all who have tried their best to find this houdini of a man. I think I will have to accept that he has either disappeared into thin air or failed to be recorded on the census for one reason or another. He was a miner so could have been 'down the mine' at the time of the census and the folk he was living with just didn't include him on their return. Anything is possible. Thanks again everyone.

Yes, Wisechild know the problem only too well!

I only thought he may have been in the military earlier than WW1 because of his rank, but no trace of a Corby in India in 1911. However, looking at it a lance-sergeant is only a corporal "acting up" - and it would not take too much to go from a private to a corporal, then to acting sergeant especially when there were so many deaths. So maybe I've gone with the red-herring ;-)

I had a similar problem looking for my grandmother´s brother in 1911.
Had all his details, baptism etc. Tried every combination of names I could think of.
The children had been orphaned in 1907. Found the married one & the four in care without much problem. Knew from his army records that this one should be in a sanatorium in Dover, but no sign.
Eventually found him. Exactly the details I had entered & exactly where I expected him to be.
When I looked at the original I realised that his place of birth hadn´t been entered. I of course had been putting it in the search details.
Yippee.
Only one sibling left to find now!!!!

Familysearch have the 1911 overseas census military records - and I'm not seeing him anywhere, let alone the two locations supplied by Jude.

Maybe he was lodging with someone and got "dittoed" on the last name. I did try to look for a Richard Corby (first names) just in case.

Goodness, being out of the country with the Armed Forces would never have entered my mind. Lateral thinking obviously isn't my thing ! I'll have a dig around too re the India scenario. Thanks for the idea.

Just a thought.....The two regiments that the Richard W Corby that Flip posted medal card about were Northumberland Fusiliers and Durham Light Infantry

Both regiments were stationed in India at the time of the 1911 census. I can't find the military censuses overseas on Ancestry and on FMP am not coming up with anything. Google says the Northumberland Fusiliers are on page 2026!

If anyone is better at searching than I am then maybe.......

Thank you all so much. I had not got the baptism details but did have the death details. Both Richard and Mary are buried at Kurri Kurri cemetery along with their baby son John who died aged 6 months.

Hi Margaret, the ship stopped at Freemantle before continuing it's journey - but that was the first port of call in Australia - so that is where the immigrants were listed. Richard did not leave the ship at Freemantle. Looking at the passenger list, it was continuing to Melbourne and Sydney. Added: some passengers were booked to go to Brisbane and Auckland as well.

Possibly someone with more knowledge of Australian records can check it out and confirm if it is him - although I think it likely?

I even tried Scotland to no avail...assume you have burial details for the pair

Flip - thank you so much. I knew Richard had gone ahead but couldn't find him anywhere although must confess I was looking at vessels embarking at Sydney not Freemantle. Richard subsequently spent all his life in the Newcastle, Abermain area until his death in 1964. He also was in the Australian Forces during WW2. Just as an aside, his wife Mary never ever visited Uk to see her family as she was so home-sick she said she would not return to Australia, so didn't risk it.

When Mary & Richard jnr travelled they were 3rd class passengers, bound for Sydney - this could be him, the image also states bound Sydney and he appears to be travelling alone:

This vessel left london approx 29 January - but the outgoing passenger list did not have an R W Corby. I've been through all the images on ancestry, and he isn't listed so wonder if he was a late addition, or transferred from another ship. The voyage went via Suez, and was delayed in Colombo so maybe he boarded there.

Like everyone else, I can't see him in 1911 sorry.

Sorry, but no sign of the military record for the above on ancestry - maybe he signed on earlier than WW1 and someone could check on FMP?

Incidently, from where do you know he was a miner - from his marriage record, or later records in Australia?

Added: according to national archives he was a Lance-Sergeant, and his first theatre of war was France in 1915, so maybe that indicated he had served earlier to have achieved the rank? I'm not that up on military history though.

If you look on freebmd there is only one Richard W Corby born between 1870-1900 even using phonetic search, so what about this medal card?
