That's all I can think that for some reason they didn't want to be found.

OK think Maureen has ruled out my possible passenger list - so back to the drawing board!

Well, as you say why no paper-trail following their marriage? No deaths, census etc - wonder if they simply changed name, maybe he got in trouble for something and was hiding under another name?

I had the same thoughts Christine! There is this, could it be wife going to join husband?

From UK outbound passenger lists:
Caroline Stark
Gender:Female
Age:31
Birth Date:abt 1862
Departure Date:16 Sep 1893
Port of Departure:Liverpool, England
Destination Port:New York, USA
Ship Name:Campania
Search Ship Database:
Search the 'Campania' in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database
Master:Hains

A "wife" travelling with Alice (4) and Wm (2) but not accompanied by her husband.

Edit, found them on NY arrivals but no more conclusive I'm afraid & I can't make out their final destination.

I knew a man who worked on the railways all his life. When he retired he used to travel on the trains for free. He was an oap when I was small.

Kevin

Kevin Report 12 Jul 2014 11:28

LOL true.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 12 Jul 2014 11:25

It may be that if Caroline's family had connections with a church in Gloucestershire that they decided to use that to get married. They would probably have got cheap train travel!

Kevin

Kevin Report 12 Jul 2014 11:15
