Choccy, that 1901 census you posted, if I am reading it right Thomas & Sarah Miller were both children of Lydia - and not married. Both have occupations as well. Maybe Thomas just registered Annie in school but wasn't her parent - it looks to me more like she was Lydia's adopted daughter (or rather Lydia took her in as no official adoptions back then..

So maybe when Lydia died she got shunted off to the industrial school? Only surmising, as I haven't looked for Lydia's death yet.

ADDED: Lydia born Ilford, along with husband Thomas, son Thomas and daughter Sarah all of the right age are on 1891 census in Poplar. Neither Thomas nor Sarah are married.

Lol I have had some very big eye openers with some of my other relations, so nothing surprises me now, just love the intrigue and get such a buzz out of searching, unfortunately my husband does not have the same love of it all as me. but then it is his family I am looking at.

Don't believe everything you read on marriage certificates - a lot of fathers were invented to cover illigitimacy - it wasn't checked back then.

Flip Report 15 Aug 2014 14:21

I also wondered about this one for her in 1911 - maybe she didn't get on with adopted parents:

Annie Miller
Age in 1911:17
Estimated birth year:abt 1894
Relation to Head:Inmate
Gender:Female
Birth Place:London, England
Civil Parish:Croydon
County/Island:Surrey
Country:England
Street address:
St Mary's Roman Catholic Industrical School For Girls, Wellesley Road, Croydon
Marital Status:Single
Occupation:School Part Time Housework
Registration district:Croydon
Registration District Number:39
Sub-registration district:South Croydon

Or maybe she had been in bother?

That is very interesting something else to get my teeth into I had found the school record but must admit due to being Thomas dis guarded it but now its a possible, due to her being adopted, she would need to put her actual father on her marriage banns, so another possible.

thank you.

its the same as the Vosper on 1924 electoral register they are living at number 70 with Emily Benbrook, I was wondering if Emily Benbrook took in boarder or had servants.

It looks very much like she was living there, or maybe Emily got on well with the Rodmells (next door) and aloud Annie to use her address, did they check back then for proof of residency.

Its so strange that our one family member ie Annie's grandson will not fill in any gaps. unless he does not know him self.

I wondered if Emily Benbrook was connected to her, for her to give that address - she must have been living with her for a time. Emily Caroline Benbrook was living at the same address since at least 1916 as this is her husbands death in WW1:

PrivateService No:4176 Date of Death:06/07/1916Age:33Regiment/Service:Devonshire Regiment 1st/6th Bn. Grave Reference: IX. J. 18. Cemetery:AMARA WAR CEMETERYAdditional Information: Husband of Emily Caroline Benbrook, of 70, Samuel St., Limehouse, London.

However, her maiden name was Willis, born c1883

Thank you, I have Stanley's military records he served until 1920, I love a challenge, but feel I have to admit defeat unless our family member will give me any more info, I am leading towards German.

xx

Flip

Flip Report 15 Aug 2014 13:04

One thing, in 1918 Stanley was registered at 68 Samuel street, but on a different list as an absent voter (qualification NM = on military service), but I can't see him until he appears with Annie in 1930 at 20 York Place, Stepney.

If she was German, I don't think she would have been eligible to vote unless she had been naturalised?? But not sure on this.

Tracy

Tracy Report 15 Aug 2014 12:38

Lol sorry I did not realise 30 was the age back then, my lady just does not want to be found.

But was wondering who was there in 1920 was hoping for the Vosper.

xx

Flip

Flip Report 15 Aug 2014 12:31

1921 at 70 Samuel St were Ellen & Frederick Vosper & Emily Benbrood
At 68 were George & Sarah Rodmell & Joe McGuire.

You're not likely to find your lady as she was under 30 so wouldn't have been eligible to vote.

DOH...you were wanting 1920

ADDED: trying to drill down into the districts, the years jump from 1918-22. In 1918 just Emily Benbrook was registered at 70 Samuel St

Tracy

Tracy Report 15 Aug 2014 12:05

HI
The Vosper's were at number 70 Samuel street in the electoral Register in 1921,(as above) is there a way of finding out who was living at number 70 Samuel street in 1920 as Annie Kathleen Miller, has this address on her marriage banns of 23 may 1920.

Thank you

Tracy

Tracy Report 14 Aug 2014 14:59

WOW thank you for that I have been getting small amounts on the Rodmell's so this is great I will add those details. George Rodmell likes spelling his name Rodwell, so the census searches have been hard.
George and sarah are Stanleys mum and dad.

The same people are living at the same addresses above in 1921 too

Gritty

Gritty Report 14 Aug 2014 14:21

I don't know if this helps at all but 1924 electoral registers for 70 Samuel Street, Stepney:
Emily Benbrook
Ellen Vosper
Frederick Vosper

Interestingly at number 68 are:
George Rodmell
Sarah Rodmell

Tracy

Tracy Report 14 Aug 2014 13:06

Thank you so much, I did not notice the witness name, it is looking interesting. It may be worth me getting the death certificate. If I can get the family member to confirm at least where she past away.
