Update.......

I have made contact with my father's cousin in Dorset. I wrote a few weeks ago, and his son kindly replied just recently.

Early days yet, but contact is now made (Hurray !!!) after a long gap.

Something to build on!

I sent a request to the Bridport & West Bay Heritage forum suggested by Gritty, and this is the reply I have just received regarding Albert Richard Smith

Albert Smith is buried in Bridport Cemetery East Road ( Grave Reference ST28)
Our record shows that he was buried on 9 July 1966, listed as an Army Pensioner aged 74 yrs , he died in North Allington Hospital ( a new hospital has since been built on the site ) Also in the same grave is a Florence Mabel Smith who was buried on 9 March 1965 aged 76, having died at 134A Orchard Avenue.

If you wanted to visit the Cemetery do let me know and our Cemetery Superintendent could show you where the grave is.
There are a number of Smiths buried in the Cemetery and we do not have any grave record for your Grandfather there.

Kellys Directory of 1939 lists Albert as a Beer Retailer at 168 North Allington Bridport – this may be the house that was a former inn opposite the end of Hospital Lane .
It may have been called the Auld Acquaintance –the Museum documents don’t give the street number of that inn so can’t place it in N Allington.

A Bridport researcher has done a lot of research on inns and ale houses in town and he has never been able to verify that 168 was in fact an inn.
It is a property opposite the end of Hospital Lane. The 1920’s Rate Lists list 168 as a house and garden.

Albert Smith could have bought and sold beer as an occupation or worked in an inn, for another employer.
He could have sold beer from a room in his house too as a ‘beer house’.

168 North Allington still exists today.

A great response!!

And just for info- it looks like his son's name was Derek R (born 1929)

Have pm'd details (marriage & 2012 electoral register possible address)

Also possible news article which I'm not sure if it is related as no age given- possibly too young?

EDIT: Article not related :)

Thanks Gritty, I'll look into those suggestions.

You could try asking the Bridport & West Bay Heritage forum:
http://www.bridportandwestbay.co.uk/contact-us.html

Or e-mailing the Dorset History Centre:
https://www.dorsetforyou.com/dorsethistorycentre

Failing that, all I can think of is searching historical electoral registers for pubs in Bridport- He may not of course, lived at the pub he ran? I suspect these may be held at the history centre- or I'm sure they could tell you where they are held

Hi,

Great News ! I have the death cert of Albert Richard Smith - it arrived this morning.

He died on 5th July, 1966, at North Allington Hospital, Bridport, Dorset, aged 73 years.

His address is given as 134 A, Orchard Avenue, Bridport, Dorset. A Licenced Victualler (Retired).

His daughter in law Pamela R. Smith was the informant, of 5, Edgehill Road, Bridport. (I don't know name of his son - husband to Pamela).

It doesn't say which pub he ran in Bridport, or for how long, which is what I am ultimately trying to find out........!!!!

Can anyone help me on this now that I have this extra information please?

Thanks,

Marcus

I think you really need that death cert to see if his home address is on it - then you can see if the pub name is mentioned or if the address can be linked to a pub.

If you get that info then you might find this site helpful:

Ann Cardiff when you copy google search results with incomplete URLs for the links, they aren't clickable and don't help people to go to the sites ... for instance

freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~fordingtondorset/Files/...

anybody who wants to visit that site just has to do the google search all over again to find what you found

it's quite easy to copy and paste a URL ... just put your mouse over the link, right-click on it and then click 'copy link location' or 'copy shortcut' or whatever your browser says, then right-click in the message you want to post it in and select 'paste' :-)

of course you want to be doing the search in a different tab from the one where you are posting the message

(also, and I hope you don't mind me saying it, it can be very helpful to put a number of things, like those search results or the baptisms for a family, in one post rather than separate posts for each one ... that way the thread doesn't reach 20 posts and flip to a page 2 or page 3 quite so fast and it can be much easier to 'follow the thread' :-D it's easy to do even if you edit a post to add the next thing to it)
