Alan, where did you get Luke's Army info from?

This is what the National Archives have:

Reference:WO 121/216/164
Description:
LUKE JENNINGS.
Born CALTHA, Galway.
Served in 13th Foot Regiment; 1st Royal Veteran Battalion.
Discharged aged 39 after 20 years 05 months of service.
*******Residence or place where pension paid stated in document.
See film image 340.
Date: 1826

The images for this can be viewed on FMP - is that where you obtained the info?

There is another Luke Jennings who also served in the 13th Foot

Reference:WO 119/64/387
Description:
LUKE JENNINGS.
Born CASTLEBLAKENEY, Galway.
Served in 13th Foot Regiment.
Discharged aged 33.
Covering dates give year of enlistment to year of discharge.
Kilmainham Reference: B2999.
Date:
1807-1821
Held by: The National Archives, Kew
Legal status: Public Record
Language: English

Or, are these two records for the same man? Discharged aged 33 in 1821 would be 38 in 1826, or could be 39 depending on DOB.

Potty, you comment that Caltha is a loch, i wonder if Caltha is a misread and it should be Caltra, a Irish person suggested this to me, it is a shame that there was not a more complete description of which Castletown it was as i have a gut feeling that this could be where he married his wife and where their children were born.

Alan Report 15 Oct 2014 15:24

Jacqueline, thank you, you have confirmed that Daughter Jane was born in Ireland 1839 which is what i thought. You say that you would give more credence to Army Officials who were literate but i have shown they were incorrect when they say he joined on 2nd October 1809. he was fighting the French in the West Indies and was awarded a medal sometime during January / February 1809. No Jacqueline i am not fully au Fait with the workings of the Royal Chelsea hospital, please enlighten me.

The only Caltha I can find seems to be a Lough, also know as Loch Callow; there is more than one Castletown, one in each of the following counties: Cork, Laois, Limerick, Wexford and Tyrone.

He was with the Veterans from 1821 until his discharge

Are you fully au fait with the function of the Royal Hospital, Chelsea?

To find out where Castletown is....you could try googling

My post was the FMP transcription of the handwritten document on that site

Alan

Alan Report 15 Oct 2014 13:30

Alviegal, you post is very interesting, you say his discharge papers say he had two children, does it name them ?i he was discharged in 1826, two years before his eldest Son Thomas was in 1828, Thomas was my Great Granddad and Thomas's son Luke Born in 1861 is my Granddad, you mention his future residence was going to be Castletown, is this in Ireland ? because it could be where the children were born. regards

Alan

Alan Report 15 Oct 2014 13:19

Trying to respond to all of you, Many thanks, first of all it is amazing how many official documents are incorrect, Jacqueline your post says he was born 1787 but he was born 1780/1781, it says he was 39 when he was discharged but he was in fact 46. Astra your post says he enlisted 2nd Oct 1809, he actually enlisted in 1806, in 1809 he was already fighting in the West Indies, he took part in two succesful battles against the French at Martinique and Guadaloupe for which he was awarded the General Service Medal with two bars. Potty: yes my Gt Gt Granddad ended his days a Chelsea Pensioner, but my question is: Why was he admitted to the Royal Chelsea Hospital in 1821 whilst still a serving soldier ? something must have been wrong with him ! you are right Potty, Thomas was his son, he was my Gt Granddad and was born in 1828 after Luke left the army.

Potty

Potty Report 15 Oct 2014 12:25

Looks as if Thomas was his son. There is a marriage for him to Margaret Cooney in Manchester Cathedral in 1849 - father Luke, pensioner. So, it looks as if the family were probably not Catholic.

alviegal

alviegal Report 15 Oct 2014 12:20

His discharge papers only state he has a wife and 2 children and future residence was going to be Castletown.

Potty

Potty Report 15 Oct 2014 12:09

Not find any marriages for a Luke Jennings on Scotlandspeople.

He may not have been injured - he is listed on the census as a Chelsea Pensioner.
