This is a potentially useful piece of evidence. Can you give me the context - i.e. which of the other WWI collections did you find it in and what else did it say? How do I know this is the same Walter Knowles as the info immediately above? I take it that they are two separate pieces of info? I need to link the Walter Knowles who had Isaac as his NOK to the one who married Mary Ann Hatchman and was a soldier in Greenock.

The two service records are the same man. He served in WW1 (UK) & WW11 (USA)

The WW11 service would probably have been as a reserve, due to his age

The only other info on the above record is his address and work place: 64 Powhatan St, Oakland. Work: Daool Rubber company (which matches the US census)

The marriage certificate in 1915 will give you his fathers name

Walter Knowles (1889 - 1965) was born on February 24, 1889. He was born into the Knowles family.

Walter had no-known marriages. Walter died in April 1965 at age 76.

Walter Knowles's last known residence is at Rhode Island.


There is no evidence to back any of this up.

Thank you, all. The evidence suggests that my Walter Knowles (dob on baptism record 24 Feb 1889) is the same one as in the USA (birth date in draft papers 24 Feb 1889). However, if that is the case, who is the Walter Knowles born in the June quarter of 1889?

It's the same Walter but registered in the June Q

He could have been registered in April which would make the June Q

Please can you tell me anything about his brothers Arthur (b c1882) and Albert Knowles (B c19884)?

I have the baptisms for that family but Arthur K does not appear to have been baptised. He was a witness at his brother Benjamin's marriage in 1907. I have all the censuses to 1911 but after that he disappears. There are several possible marriages but I do not have access to details. It is possible that he was buried on 20 Feb 1936 (his age fits).

Albert K was bap 12 March 1889 at St Mark's Church, Bolton. He reg. the death of his mother on 6 July 1909. On 11 Sept 1928 he reg. the death of his mother. I have censuses to 1911. Possibly married Harriet Malley but don't know about children.

I should be grateful for anything you can tell me.

Corrections: Albert K was baptised 12 March 1899. On 11 Sept 1928 he reg. the death of his sister Sarah Caroline.

Not sure if this pertains to your Albert. You thought he might have married Harriet. This is probably for the death that you found.

Basically she received £922 10s and costs. Albert had been knocked down and fatally injured by Muller in his car, whilst out riding on his bike.

EDIT This is the wrong Albert and family.

The newspaper report is the Albert K I am looking for. He was living at that address when he registered the death of his sister Sarah Caroline in 1928. I have her death cert. Thank you.

On the other hand, his father was Isaac K, who features on the other marriage record. You are right. I must send for some certificates.

1911. Definitely not the right family. This is the one that produced the Albert who married into the Eckersley family (witness Edwin K).

Thank you. Albert's story is coming together beautifully. The cycle accident rings a faint bell in the dim recesses of my memory. I wasn't around at the time but later, as a small child, I vaguely remember mention of it. My father (Albert's nephew) was also a cyclist. The wealthy widow Harriet doesn't seem to have remarried? At least, I can't find her, or her death. Maybe she retired somewhere warm. And I wonder what became of her wealth? As far as I know, my father had none of it. Perhaps it went to her siblings' children.
