Thanks again, all. You have solved a mystery to which no one else had an answer.

Please can you tell me anything about his brothers Arthur (b c1882) and Albert Knowles (B c19884)?

I have the baptisms for that family but Arthur K does not appear to have been baptised. He was a witness at his brother Benjamin's marriage in 1907. I have all the censuses to 1911 but after that he disappears. There are several possible marriages but I do not have access to details. It is possible that he was buried on 20 Feb 1936 (his age fits).

Albert K was bap 12 March 1889 at St Mark's Church, Bolton. He reg. the death of his mother on 6 July 1909. On 11 Sept 1928 he reg. the death of his mother. I have censuses to 1911. Possibly married Harriet Malley but don't know about children.

I should be grateful for anything you can tell me.

It's the same Walter but registered in the June Q

He could have been registered in April which would make the June Q

Thank you, all. The evidence suggests that my Walter Knowles (dob on baptism record 24 Feb 1889) is the same one as in the USA (birth date in draft papers 24 Feb 1889). However, if that is the case, who is the Walter Knowles born in the June quarter of 1889?

The WW11 service would probably have been as a reserve, due to his age

The only other info on the above record is his address and work place: 64 Powhatan St, Oakland. Work: Daool Rubber company (which matches the US census)

The marriage certificate in 1915 will give you his fathers name

How do I know this is the same Walter Knowles as the info immediately above? I take it that they are two separate pieces of info? I need to link the Walter Knowles who had Isaac as his NOK to the one who married Mary Ann Hatchman and was a soldier in Greenock.

I've posted the marriage and death of Walter

The postings about Sarah Ann Martha Silk are correct. It is, therefore, the right family in 1911. I have the parents' history (both Knowles and Silk families) but have not been able to trace the three youngest sons for sure: Arthur, Albert and Walter Knowles. I have dates of possible marriages. Thanks for the info re. date of census. Walter obviously did not go to Canada. Thanks also for the British Army ref. with his father's name as next of kin.

1911 census was taken 2 April. How could he have sailed to Canada 18 Feb.? Unless he stayed aboard and came right home?

And this guy was not a compositor, he was a spindle maker, iron works. (Actually it was transcribed as spinster maker which could be misconstrued)
