I had a quick look at the baptism register for St Mary and St Lawrence Great Waltham and St Martin Little Waltham for around 1795 but tI can see no entries for the surname Viall/Vial/Vile. Of course the family may have come into Great Waltham from anywhere and that would mean searching the registers moving out from Great Waltham looking for instances of the surname.

There is the possibility that they were non conformist and in that case the registers are not on Seax and can only be viewed on film at the Essex Record Office.

Family search has some non con records for Essex and you can get copies of entries through their photoduplication service which is very good. A search using 'Viall' and restricing the search to Essex show there were Vialls there in the 1600s and they appear quite heavily in the non con records FS have.

Good luck
Chris

Trudy do you have any idea where in Essex?

The parish registers are available on Seax, by subscription, but are not searchable by name.

Hello I am wondering if anybody would be able to help me?.
I am trying to find out where my surname comes from, I've been told that it is possibly German??

The surname is Viall, I've got back as far as 1795 in my tree with a man named Thomas vial,( viall ) and so far everyone seems to come from Essex so not sure what to do now as I'm stuck on thomas 1795.

If anybody could help me I would be grateful

Thank you
Trudy :-)
