The child Samuel on 1881 census was born no later than March 1879

The Ancestry tree is nonsense, as that Samuel was born in Oxfordshire, and probably died in 1941

Gladys, I think it may help if you could tell us a wee bit more about how you worked back to Samuel please?

Did he marry please? If so did he give a name and occupation for his father?

If the 1881 census is the correct Samuel, then the Samuel with a birth date of 16 October 1880 may not be yours as Samuel in 1881 has a brother Thomas aged 8 months.

Gladys ................

just a point of information .......

......... you may have had the 1881 census, but we, the member helpers, did not.

That is why Rootgatherer posted the entire census ............... for OUR information and help.

Sometimes we find people by tracing other family members.

Where did Louisa die please? I am not seeing an obvious death in Manchester.

Jacqueline

Jacqueline Report 12 Jan 2015 22:28

There are no births on freebmd or LancsBMD to match the 1881 census info for the boys

No sign either of a marriage for Louisa, unless you have info to the contrary, Gladys

And I can't see a death for her to match what you say.

Can you give us the freebmd transcription, please

If the person whose tree is on Ancestry thinks Portsmouth is in Sussex, the rest of the info must be highly suspect!

Have you found his brother or sister in 1891 please?

If, as seems likely, he was in some sort of institution then he may have been recorded on the census using only his initials.

Louisa says she is widowed. If she died when Samuel was a child the children may have been put into the Workhouse too. Samuel may have been sent to an industrial or orphan school from where young boys were often trained for the Navy.
