If the baptism is right for William in Greenwich his fathers name was William on that.

The marriage to Jane Farmar has his father as a Richard.

It's just a thought but once you have the birth cert please let us know the outcome.

Thanks Mel

I did my best to read through his army record on Ancestry, I struggled with some of the place names. It doesn't seem to be a complete record just his discharge papers.

"He was with the expedition to the East for 2.5 years and was present at the battles of Alma Balaclava ,,, Ker..arry(?) and siege of Sebastapol. He wears a medal for service in the Crimea with clasps for Alma Balaclava InKernea…(?) and Sebastapol.

His service has been exemplary. He was in possession of 4 good conduct badges when promoted to the rank of Sergeant Wheeler.
He wears a silver medal for distinguished service in the field and will receive a gratuity of £10 on discharge.
He wears a silver medal for long service and good conduct and will receive a gratuity of £10 on discharge.
There is 1 record against him in the Regimental Defaulters Book punished summarily.
[He left the service as he was disabled due to chronic rheumatism. Pains in his left side. So he was declared medically unfit for service.]
He was 5ft 6.5ins. Fair complexion. Brown hair. Hazel eyes."

Thanks for the information. His service record states he served abroad. would Ireland be classed as abroad even though it was part of the UK at that time?

I will certainly let you know when I receive the birth certificate.

Best wishes

Anne

I hope you took the advice about getting the one which is most likely to be relevant

Hi Anne

Not sure about Ireland being "abroad". More likely the time he was abroad was in those battles - Sebastapol etc. Worth checking the dates and what other battles happened around that time. That would help identify the one that I couldn't read. It may be that he was aborad when there is a gap of three or four years between children.

I have found out the Battles that he might have been involved in. The Crimean War was between 1853 and 1856 and the battles are Alma, Balaclava (he served under Lord Lucan), Inkerman, Kurekdem and Sebastopol. I think the dates of the battles coincide with a break in the birth of the children.

Heard from GRO. They can trace no birth for Frederick Johnson in Newcastle in 1847. I'm waiting for the Birth Certificate for Martha born 1860. Will let you know.
