No, Jacqueline, the original on Ancestry is the original handwritten copy that is water damaged.

Kath

Have you still not seen the death info I posted?

And it's become fairly obvious that there was no legal union between Solomon and Jane

kath23

kath23 Report 3 Feb 2015 12:20

Yes you are correct but it is incorrect.
The only way I can think that it can be right is if Mary Heyes was James Birch's [Janes first husband ] mother and she had remarried. In which case, Jane had not yet married Joseph Solomon.
Very confusing

Jacqueline

Jacqueline Report 3 Feb 2015 12:18

Agreed, but isn't the 'original' a typed transcription?

It certainly is on FMP

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 3 Feb 2015 12:12

I did check the original of the 1851 census and it does say daughter-in-law.

Jacqueline

Jacqueline Report 3 Feb 2015 12:02

Did you notice the death info?

Jacqueline

Jacqueline Report 3 Feb 2015 12:01

The 1851 census is a typed transcription taken from (presumably) a water-damaged original, so the info may not be 100% as per the original

kath23

kath23 Report 3 Feb 2015 11:55

Yes on the 1851 census she is listed with a Mary Heyes I can only think that Jane and her son are lodging with her as there are no Heyes in the family.

Joseph Solomon Jane's husband,is in a boarding house in Manchester on 1851 census night.

Thank you for all your help it is really appreciated

Maybe they didn't get legally married . You could enquire of the synagogue whether it was possible to be married according to Jewish rites but not for it to be a legal marriage

I know when I married in 1957 in the Catholic Church we had to put our banns in too at the local register office and a registrar attended the church at the time and married us legally in the vestry and we signed the register she had bought with her giving us our copy of it

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 3 Feb 2015 11:38

But is this her in 1851? She's listed as daughter-in-law of Mary Hayes:

Lancashire Death indexes for the years: 1848
Surname Forename(s) Age Sub-District Registers At Reference
BIRCH James 69 Little Bolton Bolton LB/10/456

Rather old, I would have thought, to have been marrying a minor 3 years earlier

What was his age when he married?

It looks more than likely that no second marriage took place

kath23

kath23 Report 3 Feb 2015 11:27

Sorry to confuse you,I have the marriage certificate between JANE SIMS and JAMES BIRCH, they married in 1845 in Bolton that was her first marriage.
What I cannot find is her second marriage .
JANE SIMS married JOSEPH SOLOMON before 1851 well I think she did as on the 1851 census she is living in Ashton-u-Lyne with a two month old son named JOSEPH SOLOMON .

I think her first husband JAMES BIRCH died in 1848 but I have not yet bought the certificate.

I am so sorry to confuse everyone

Not what you're after, but possibly related? The additon of an S at the end of Solomon may rule it out

Jewish Chronicle, 11 April 1873, page 17

Marriage on 2nd April at Hanley by Rev Prof Isaacs of Manchester of Sarah, daughter of Mr J. Solomons of Hanley to Mr A. Biurski of Burslem. [Sarah Solomons June 1873 Manchester 8d 813 and Abraham Biurski]
