No need to make a charity donation Natalie. I have a sub for Ancestry and had a couple of hours pleasure.

After over 35 years researching family history, it's very easy to get hooked!

If you come to Glasgow, you should visit the Mitchell Library as they have all sorts of family history records. Have a wee look on their website.

Good luck with your research.

Natalie

This is what I wrote before

Sites like Ancestry and FMP offer annual subscriptions which give unlimited access to their records.

Scotland's People, which is the site you need for Scottish BMD's and the 1911 Scottish census does NOT offer subs.

They operate ONLY on a pay-to-view basis, whereby you purchase a number of credits and use them to access info.

When those credits have been used......that's it.

So that is why people on GR are not able to do lookups on that site..........................it would mean they would pay specifically for the info someone else asks for, whereas on Ancestry and FMP, if they have a sub, they can look up 24/7

**************

Rootgatherer used (from the look of the printouts) Ancestry, so she didn't have to pay for the specific records.

In fact, as you are with Findmypast, you could have found exactly the same info yourself

But that doesn't detract from her kindness in finding it............

You're doing fine.....I'm not knocking you, believe me. Just trying to help you to understand how things operate.

Thanks kay, I undertood, I signed up with find my past without checking what you can and cant do basically, yes been on and off ancestry all day too just looking at what you can do, I think my mistake I saw"" type in a name etc" in a advert it looked so easy, luckily I had some information from relatives too, thanks again, time to switch off now , goodnight, nat.

Kay????

Kay???? Report 6 Feb 2015 20:28

Natalie,,,

Dont get in a panic first of all,its not easy to understand all the jargon when you are new and is often overlooked and that you should know......so dont worry.

As Scotlandspeople is a pay as you view site,,,,you find a record then pay to look at it,,,,,that happens each time,so can rack up lots of cash,,plus only certain years of births.deaths and marriages can be looked at in full,,,outside those years you have to buy each seperate certificare if you want to see the full details.

Subs that others have for this site ,Ancestry or Find My Past, is usually paid in one lump sum that lasts for a whole year,,,,thats the subs what most people find information for other people on.these sites do show census transcriptions of Scotland,

,But Births.Deaths and Marriages are only got on Scotlandpeople,,,plus they do have the census and other records,as you may know if you have looked at the site.

The census details posted above from rootgather is the Scottish census transcript possibly from Ancestry,,,,I dont know if Ancesry is free this weekend, but if so sign on and have a play on the site even just to search and look at the above census from rootgather so see it for yourself.

Ancestry will expect you give them your bankcard details if you take a 14 day free trial,,,,,,,so read carefully how to get back to cancel your card or they will automaticailly think you want to carry on and take a full years payment in one go....!!
