Hi Rootgather, I have Margaret ferguson McFarlane, im not sure if ferguson was another married name just noticed it on her husbands death certificate as widow.

Marriage certificate as follows at wellington st, Glasgow.

Margaret McFarlane of Glasgow, aged 27, father John Mcfarlane, married William Purvis born sunderland steelworker , dad fish monger john Purvis, they lived 2 newhall st Glasgow , Williams siblings were ellen, john George,i know William died in 1962 in the same house. please don't worry if its not enough, thank you nat.

Just as an example between 1917 and 1925 there was 34 births with the surname Purvis alone in Glasgow ,some maybe the childen of Margaret and William but without details from a birth certificate it would be impossible to know.

You can also book half day at SP Centre in Edinburgh for £9..

Natalie, do you have the earlier census records for William and Margaret showing their siblings please? That may save you a little time when searching for their children as in was quite common in Scotland for parents to use family names for their children.

If you don't have the census and would like the transcripts just give us all the details from William and Margaret's marriage certificate if you have it and we can try to help.

Sorry Jacqueline. I see you had posted an explanation while I was typing a reply to Natalie. I will leave the post to reassure Natalie that we will help in any way possible using sites we have subs for.

Natalie, there is absolutely no harm in asking. Members that have subscriptions for sites like Ancestry and Finfmypast are happy to lookup those sites for information to help. For example it could be that some of our Scottish ancestors appear on public trees on Ancestry. While all research done by others should be verified, it can be used as a starting point to narrow the search when looking for a fairly common surname.

If you live in Scotland, by far the best way to research Scottish births in the last 100 years is to spend a day at The Mitchell Library in Glasgow or the Scotlandspeople Centre in Edinburgh. The cost for the day is around £15 and you can look at as many recent births as time permits. You can't take printouts but you can make notes.. If you can visit either of those centres then you would even be able to work forward by checking to see if any of their children married in Scotland.

If you need lookups for any of the Scottish census records (apart from the 1911 which is only available on Scotlandspeople), please don't hesitate to ask and if we can help, we will.

You deserve a proper explanation

Sites like Ancestry and FMP offer annual subscriptions which give unlimited access to their records.

Scotland's People, which is the site you need for Scottish BMD's and the 1911 Scottish census does NOT offer subs.

They operate ONLY on a pay-to-view basis, whereby you purchase a number of credits and use them to access info.

When those credits have been used......that's it.

So that is why people on GR are not able to do lookups on that site..........................it would mean they would pay specifically for the info someone else asks for, whereas on Ancestry and FMP, if they have a sub, they can look up 24/7

The only problem with modern day birth indexes on Scotlandpeople is that unlike English/Welsh,they **dont display the mothers maiden name** so would be a hard job knowing and that would result in you in having to buy certificates to find a match of parents,,,,,certificates from Scotlandpeople are £12 each.

margee no not at all, I am new to the sight and took it possibly wrongly that ancestor search , meant you could ask , and before I asked I also checked other thread where people have asked for a look up that they would have to pay should they do it themselves.
I did say if someone didn't mind, I don't see others being treated the same way, but please correct me if im wrong, I am on find my past and more than keen to help anyone if I can,

Nat, are you suggesting that volunteers should pay to do look-ups for you? We are just members of GR like you and a lot of us are pensioners.

The site you need is Scotlandspeople.gov.uk

The site is pay to view and for births less that 100 years ago, you will need to buy the certificate. You would not know for sure until you bought the certificates if they were your Purvis family.

look on a Scotland site, for Margaret Mcfarlane 'children, she married William Purvis in Glagow 13 june 1917, he is 33 she is 27, thank you .nat. they lived in Glasgow all their life.
