I am tracing Alexander Mutch "farm servant" born c1858 Aberdeen and his wife Mary Watt Ross born c1859 Aberdeen. They were married 12 June 1880 at New Pitsligo Aberdeen. I see them on the 1881 census with a step daughter Elizabeth G Wood born c1876 Tyrie Aberdeen?? Totally thrown as I cant trace a marriage between Mary Watt Ross to a Wood? and she must have been very young to have had daughter Elizabeth, perhaps a marriage didn't take place

Any help appreciated.

The Mary being her mother could be an Ancestry assumption - Step-child then could have different meanings to the one we use today.

Scotland's People only has one birth for an Elizabeth G 1875/1876 but it isn't in Tyrie or Aberdeen; 5 births for Elizabeths in Aberdeenshire but none in Tyrie.

Mmmm food for thought! I don't see her on the next census where she would be 15 yrs old. There seems to be so many Alexander Mutch and Marys on Ancestry. I have the correct Alexander Mutch born 2 June 1882 at 90 High St. New Pitsligo (Tyrie) parents are Alexander Mutch farm servant and Mary Watt Ross (I have birth document). I see them on the 1881 census with 11 month old son John L Mutch but can t see a birth on sp to confirm. Alexander Mutch and Mary Watt Ross were married 12 June 1880. There is someone on Ancestry who has all the children listed including a Bathia Coutts Mutch born 1890 (I traced a death on sp in 1983 which confirms her mothers maiden name as Ross) but this person has her mothers maiden name as Anderson.. So get both confusing and annoying. I cant seem to trace Mary Watts Ross on census records before 1881 :-(

Does the marriage cert name Mary's parents?

malyon

just thinking that mary watt ross that the name watt dose not seem like a middle name could she have been born mary watt and her mother married a ross so took that name

A great & interesting website.
I have a long family connection with New Pitsligo. My Grandmother Mina Mutch was born here in 1905. She is listed in the register of electors 1931, living at no 7 High Street, along with her parents & sister Bathia. Mina's parents Alexander Mutch & Mary Watt Ross are buried in New Pitsligo churchyard along with her maternal grandmother Helen Cordiner.

Mina's father Alexander was born here in 1859, his parents were Alexander Mutch & Ann Clark.
I am looking for a photo &/or information on the poorhouse that used to be in the village.

On the subject of Mary Watt Ross, not sure about this one. If she is illegitimate,
her mother could possibly be Hellen Philip and Ross is her father's name. Watt could be her grandmother's maiden name or the surname of any of her ancestors.
Just a thought.

All that is still not finding Elizabeth G Wood but there is this which may be interesting, having asked just for Elizabeth G (no surname) 1875-1877, Aberdeenshire

-18 1875 ROSS ELIZABETH GIBB F NEW PITSLIGO /ABERDEEN 227/0B 0040

From the actual certificate -

1875 in the District of New Pitsligo

Elizabeth Gibb Ross (Illegitimate) b 30 March 1875 10pm @ 50 Low Street, New Pitsligo, Tyrie. No Father named, Mother Mary Ross General Servant.

Could Wood be the Father's surname? Need a look at the Kirk Sessions to see if there is anything written in there!
