I know it will not be possible to prove the story about the true father being from Sutton farm (unless there is a mention in a will or other document) but the relatives who remember my great grandfather say he was a very truthful man . Also he told them that one of the family from the farm emigrated to America . and I have found shipping records that could prove this . . and a def'inate record of Hugh Thomas in Canada . John Huxtable married and moved to Yorkshire , if I have the right one . Would be interesting to know if Margarette Morgan (George's mother) Is related to Jane Morgan wife of Edward Thomas , although this is going out of the family line .

Hi Gritty . You have been busy . I do have the birth certificates for Alfred John and William Here are the details . 4th February 1879 Cowbridge Alfred John Name of Father : John Huxtable Name of Mother: Margaret Thomas ,a domestic Servant occupation of father :Gardener Signature Description and residence of informant . John Huxtable Father . Cowbridge . M Thomas mother Aber House Port Talbot Registered 18th March 1879 registrar William John
10th March 1881 William . Father ------- Mother; Margaret Thomas General Servant signature of informant ; Margaret Thomas. ,Oldcastle ,Bridgend . Registered 26th April 1881 registrar Thomas Jenkins
One puzzle with John Huxtable is Cowbridge is 25-30 miles from Port Talbot . and the only Aber House I have been able to trace is in Price town Nantymoel . which was a colliery agents house . so had different families at various times .

I'm struggling with this family- SO many Thomas family!
I see that Alfred John (John) was brought up by his Grandparents, and in 1891 is living with his Grandmother a couple of doors up from his half siblings in Chapel Street.
This record fits his date of birth (and presumably 'John' is his Grandfather?)
National School Admission Registers & Log-books 1870-1914 Transcription name(s) John Thomas Birth date 04 Feb 1879 Event year 1886 School name Pen-y-bont Boys School, Bridgend Town Bridgend County Glamorganshire Parent name(s) John Book type Admissions Archive reference EM10/14 Archive Glamorganshire Archives
So maybe this entry below isn't your Alfred John?
name(s) Alfred John Thomas Birth date 04 May 1879 Event year 1884 School name Pen-y-bont Infants School, Bridgend Town Bridgend County Glamorganshire Parent name(s) George Book type Admissions Archive reference EM10/13 -------------------------------------------------------------------------
Also baptism- which gives Mother's abode as Port Talbot?
Alfred John, Son of Margaret Thomas, Single Woman, abode Port Talbot, ceremony performed by George Thomas. name(s) ALFRED JOHN THOMAS Birth year 1879 Baptism year 1879 Baptism day 22 Baptism month May Baptism place NOLTON Mother's first name(s) Margaret County Glamorganshire
Birth- For my reference:
name(s) ALFRED JOHN THOMAS Birth year 1879 Birth quarter Jan Feb Mar District BRIDGEND County Glamorganshire Volume 11A Page 522
Name: Alfred John Huxtable Registration Year: 1879 Registration Quarter: Jan-Feb-Mar Registration district: Bridgend Inferred County: Glamorgan Volume: 11a Page: 522 ---------------------------------------------------------------
And then school record for William:
National School Admission Registers & Log-books 1870-1914 Transcription name(s) William Thomas Birth date 10 Mar 1881 Event year 1885 School name Pen-y-bont Infants School, Bridgend Town Bridgend County Glamorganshire Parent name(s) George Book type Admissions Archive reference EM10/13
but then also this school record:
name(s) William Thomas Birth date 04 Apr 1880 Event year 1887 School name Pen-y-bont Boys School, Bridgend Town Bridgend County Glamorganshire Parent name(s) George Book type Admissions Archive reference EM10/14
William listed as William H Huxtable on 1881- but no matching Huxtable birth?
I'll try and come back to this tomorrow!

I don't know if this will help ,or confuse things even more . The family story is this . Alfred John and his brother William Henry were both born before the marriage of Margaret and George Thomas Margaret's maiden name was also Thomas .On the birth certificates Alfred Johns father is given as John Huxtable but three months later he is baptised as Alfred John Thomas. William's father is not named . William is two years younger . In later years Alfred John told some of grandchildren that despite the name on his birth certificate his ,and William's true father was one of the Thomas family from Sutton Farm / Manor . and that John Huxtable was a gardener, who was paid to give his name as the father . In those days the Thomas family were a rich family who farmed half the vale . Interesting to see the Morgan name on George's family . At the time Alfred John and William were born , the head of Sutton Farm was Edward Thomas who was Married to Jane Morgan. from Saint Brides Major . Also on Alfred John's birth certificate it says Margaret is a domestic servant Aber House . only Aber house I can trace is in Pricetown Nantymoel . At that time there was a Morgan family there , but they were from Montgomeryshire and I haven't been able to find any link . so could be a co-incidence.
On Alfred John's marriage certificate it gives his father's name as Alfred John Thomas the same as his own . His mother and stepfather had both passed away before he married .
In1901 Alfred Johns younger half brother George worked at Sutton Farm

If you look for Margaret's parents .there is another problem if I have the correct censuses . in 1881 her father is 80 her mother is 50 in1871 father is 67 mother is 39 and in 1861 father is 40 Mother is 30 so not much chance of finding B M D certificates . if they go back that far
