Sorry, forgot to say that in Scotland female deaths are recorded in the index under both their married and maiden surnames.

If you search for a wife's death first, the entry will tell you if she is "married to" or "widow of" and that can narrow the search period for the husband's death.

When searching for the name Janet , it is best to select the forename variants option as Janet and Jessie were interchangeable in Scotland and it may be that in the case of a death that the informant always knew the deceased as Jessie rather than her "Sunday" name of Janet.

Statutory registration didn't begin until 1855 in Scotland so you won't get a birth certificate before then. The best you can hope for is a christening record.

For Scots born before 1855, if they married after 1855 then the marriage certificate will name both parents including the mother's maiden surname. Again for those born before 1855 but dying in Scotland after 1855, the death certificate will name all spouses, father's name and occupation and mother's name including her maiden surname if the informant knew the details.

So if you get Janet's marriage certificate it will name her mother. If you get her father's death certificate it will hopefully name all his spouses and his parents.

Credits for Scotlandspeople cost £7.00 for 30 credits. 1 credit to view search results and 5 to view / download the register entry.

I guess FMP/FS/SP all use the same transcription
Here's FreeCEN's transcription for 1851 - one advantage of FreeCEN is that it's easy to see adjacent h/h's, so if you were looking to buy the image from SP, you could check out someone else on the same page.

Thank you, from all the above information i can see that Robert Hamilton born in Lanarkshire 1801 was married to Mary (?)

Where might i find information on his parents?. Again following the same pattern i assume his father is also Robert Hamilton and born in Scotland too.

Any particular sites i should look at?

Again thank you for the information. I will need to purchase a birth certifiate in order to check if the mother was Elizabeth Reid (who i originally thought) or Elisabeth Brown.

This may be her parents marriage?? But if it is, William left it pretty late to marry for the first time.

I have included another marriage which may have been a first marriage for him. It is all guesswork though.

If his father is Robert and his mother Mary, this could be him in 1851:

Name:Robert Hamilton
Age:18
Estimated Birth Year:abt 1833
Relationship:Son (Child)
Father: Robert Hamilton
Mother: Mary Hamilton
Gender:Male
Where born:Hamilton, Lanark
Parish Number:647
Civil Parish:Hamilton

Address:14 Campbell St
Occupation:Carter

Robert Hamilton 50 , Weaver, b Hamilton
Mary Hamilton 40 b Hamilton
Robert Hamilton 18
Agness Hamilton 8 b Hamilton

Baptism of Robert & Janet's daughter:

Robert Hamilton

mentioned in the record of Mary Smith Hamilton

Name: Robert Hamilton
Gender: Male
Wife: Janet Dykes
Daughter: Mary Smith Hamilton

As she is possibly named after Robert's mother, I would guess that Smith was his MMN.

John Smurthwaite senior has died by 1861, so the nearest the records get to his place of birth are Durham on the 1851 census and although the transcription says not in county 1841, I'm inclined to see the original as saying Yes to born in county.

As the possibility is that the first male child is John W, I'm wondering about this baptism for his father - ??
