If you check out the 1861 census......Father Edward Mummery's occupation is Out Door Officer of Customs.

So going by the Probate I posted for John Mummery, it would seem it was Edward senior who was the son of John Mummery.

Wow. Thank you everyone. A lot to take in. So John was actually Edward .

Edward seems to have been passed down regularly in fact my father in law who died last year was also Edward as was his father and Grandfather. Could be a tradition of first born male heir being named Edward.

Nor was his father named JOHN................look at the census I posted at 10.21

Havent a wife for John ?
Son Edward 1851/ 1931 was married to Elizabeth c Summers 1848 - 1923.

He had a daughter Susanna 1884 and a daughter ANNIE C 1894 - which might fall in with earlier suggestion ie name moved down generation/

I have been having some difficulty in tracing this man. I believe he lived in Folkestone / Dover area of Kent. I have definite information, he had at least one son Edward Mummery born 1851 and died 22/6/1931 also in Dover / Folkestone area.

Hope someone can elaborate .
