Have you got your mother's birth cert?

Where and when was she born?

As I said above no Hassall/Day births on freebmd

Carole Mac Report 28 Jun 2015 08:44

Sorry, Jacqueline, my mother was born in Toronto Canada to Florence Wright and James Hassall, I have the certificate. Not sure when John Wright died unfortunately. That might help me understand what happened.

Jacqueline I am beginning to think that, but I wanted to exhaust all avenues. Florence's first marriage was to Wright but we think there was no divorce. Hassall (Florence's second partner) was my mother's surname, no marriage there. Both Florence's and Percival, no children. I read that during the war years name change was documented, and as we can't find anything I am now assuming Florence changed her name prior to going to NZ, her passport is in the name Aldridge. Just as a footnote, Florence was a busy lady! After Percival died in NZ, she married in NZ, and I do have the certificate for that! Thank you for your persistence and time.

No marriage for Florence Wright to Hassall on freebmd

And no births for Hassall with MMN Day

When did her husband die?

One of your other threads has two other possible names for the woman.............Hassall and Wright

There doesn't have to have been a legally- implemented name change

She probably just called herself Aldridge after she took up with Percival

Did they have children together?

Or is your line from one of her other relationships?

Hi Jacqueline,
Her maiden name was Day, born 1896 in Lytham, Lancashire. Yes that is the correct death for the first Florence. Therefore any marriage, name change etc can only be after 1938 and before 1948 when they travelled to NZ.

Good morning, I am back (In Australia so there is a time difference).
Yes, Percival had two wives named Florence. The first, Florence Hutchins died. My grandmother was the second Florence. Yes, all the info re going to NZ and his death are correct. Percival Loe Aldridge was born in Oxford in 1877. I originally (for several years) have tried to find the second marriage but to no avail, and have had threads requesting help on that. Also tried looking for a name change by deed poll, no luck. Then thought I might be able to find electoral rolls with my grandmother's name change. Just trying to tie up loose threads, and a bit like a dog with a bone, I would love to get a result. I do know they were living in Lower End Long Crendon and I know the cottage. Maybe the South Norwood address was where they were just prior to emigration? Thank you for taking time to help.

Hardly anyone had a telephone in the 1940's

I would have suggested contacting the library, but they can't search without an exact address

How do you know they were in Bucks in the years you refer to?

The emigration info tells a different tale about the last UK address

I'm afraid I don't see anything on ancestry for Percival after the 1911 census, except for his death and burial records in New Zealand in 1950.

Florence and Percival are on NZ ER - Roskill, 1949

No help re Buckinghamshire, though, I'm afraid.

Ancestry has some Bucks phone records, but I don't see anything for Long Crendon or Aylesbury.

Thank you. Yes I have just been looking and realised that was the case re the electoral rolls. Her husband was Percival L Aldridge. Between about 1940 and 1948 they were in Aylesbury and Long Crendon. Is there somewhere I can look up the historic phone directories, or do I need a subscription?
