Eringobragh1916 Report 1 Aug 2015 13:37

Kate. can you clarify did John (your grandfather) go out to the US to join the brothers..?

There is quite a bit of info.supplied on the thread so far relating to a Monahan/Monaghan family from Gallon ( RC Parish Denn ) Co.Cavan.....

The parents of John Monaghan who married Catherine Mulligan were Patrick Monahan and Anne Galligan (Gritty 31.July)...

The Galligans were certainly from the Gallon/ Denn area of Co.Cavan the Monahans were probably from one of the surrounding Townlands.

Patrick and Anne Monahan 1901/1911 Census Gallon Co Cavan appear to be the parents of the Monahans you are looking for.
Patrick the eldest child of Patrick Monahan and Anne Galligan... Was Baptised June 2 1872 at the RC Chapel Parish of Denn sponsors were Michael Galligan and Susan Cusack.
There is a marriage for 8thJuly 1870 of a Pat.....and Anne Galligan witnesses..Peter Caine and Daphne Galligan unfortunately the PP must have been on the Poteen as he has not listed the Grooms surname and has the following notation under Daphne Galligans' name ..(I Think) !!!...
Was rather amused at that...!!!

hi Eringobragh,

your quote :

where is this thread please... i can't find it !!!

Eringobragh1916

Eringobragh1916 Report 1 Aug 2015 21:12

Kate ...Its on this thread page 1 ...supplied by Gritty.....

Bernard (Barney) went out to the US ?? when then James and Patrick followed in 1899 on the Teutonic.
Barney married a Hannah Barrett in Silver Bow Montana 1913...she was a widow and her parents names were James O'Brien and Ann Sullivan ..Hannah was b Boston Mass.I think she may have died in 1914 as I have found a Death notice for a Hannah Monahan Butte Mt.1914 and a Barney Monahan is listed a lodger on the 1920 census Butte Mt. aged 44 and single

So far you have Barney James Patrick and John going to the US..
On the 1901/1911 Census for Gallon is a Michael Monahan/Monaghan so there is 5 out of a possible 6 bros. accounted for...

Residents of a house 1 in Gallon Glebe (Moynhall, Cavan)

Monaghan Patrick 50 Male Head of Family Roman Catholic Co Cavan Farmer Cannot read or write - Married -
Monaghan Anne 48 Female Wife Roman Catholic Co Cavan Farmers Wife Can read and write - Married -
Monaghan Annie 17 Female Daughter
Monaghan Maggie 10 Female Daughter
Monaghan Michael 7 Male Son

If you compare this one with the 1911 you will find major discrepancies with the info re.ages...so its difficult to work out which is correct.

Gritty Report 2 Aug 2015 15:03

But Patrick and Bridget did have a son Patrick- he's listed with his Mum on the 1881 and 1901 census, born c1877 Strathaven. I put details of those census on page 1.

Patrick, husband of Bridget, died in 1912 Strathaven. On his death certificate (on scotlandspeople) he is listed as the widower of Bridget Devine and his parents are listed as Lawrence Mulligan, labourer (deceased) and Alice Mulligan (deceased- maiden name McGuire). His son PATRICK registered the death.
