I do believe that at that time it was illegal for a man to marry his dead wife's sister so it will be interesting so see what that 2nd marriage cert states! ;-)

I think it only became a legal possibility around 1907 ??

I am definitely interested in details from the marriage certificates- I really hope there are a few extra clues to work with. Don't forget to update us :-)

Deborah, I know you're not seeing the connection, but to save me looking later I thought I'd just add this- John Thomas Howard remarried in 1873 (I believe Sarah, nee Pyers, died in 1868). Just to confuse things further, he married another Sarah, and possibly shaved a little off his age as she was younger. John is listed as a widower living at Princes Gardens (although looking at the census this maybe Princes Court).

Name: John Thomas Howard
Estimated birth year: abt 1843
Age: 30
Spouse: Sarah Shaw
Spouse Age: 23
Record Type: Marriage
Event Date: 12 Apr 1873
Parish: St Jude, Bethnal Green
Borough: Tower Hamlets
Father Name: John Thomas Howard (Bricklayer)
Spouse Father: John Shaw
Register Type: Parish Register

(address could relate to below man, in 1882 newspaper article, if he perhaps 'lodged' there at time!)

Edwin Parker, hairdresser, of 4, Warren-street, Tottenham-court-road.

(1881 at 74)

(Marriage Cert. no 2, lol)

Londonbelle....yes this is the marriage certificate to Mary Ann.
Witnesses Mary Ann Hagger and Antonio Gulani.

Gritty....yes I'm confused about the Mariner/farmer thing.
William was a hairdresser too....I think that he worked or owned a shop in Judd Street.
The address given for Mary Ann at time of marriage was also 21 Eyre St Hill.

Also think he lied about his age when he got married because it states he was 21 but in Jan 1879 he would of only been 19!!
