Oh NO!!!

Man of Ross, and General Advertiser - Thursday 18 December 1856

A MAN WITH FOUR WIVES
A man said to be in the above interesting position was recently brought up at the police office, Birmingham, on a charge of bigamy. His name was James Chamberlain, his age 32, occupation a bricklayer, and his place of residence Brickkiln Street. The charge was preferred by Mary Ann Chamberlain, the third love of the prisoner. She stated that Chamberlain had been married four times. She was married to him some time ago but only lived with him for a short period on account of his brutal conduct towards her. He had lately married someone called Agnes, who now lived with him, and who had refused to prefer any charge against him. Sargeant Claxton said it was presumed his first wife was dead, and that the second was illegal. Mrs Chamberlain No. 3 who was the only one of the wives in court, agreed with the statement to a certain extent, and said she had seen Agnes on the subject, but she refused to attend. Mr Kynnersley said the accused could only be punished on the complaint of Agnes and he must therefore be discharged.
