Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 16 Nov 2015 07:43

My FIL was in a children's home from about 1906 . He was illegitimate although his 1901 birth cert doesn't show him as such cos his mum lied !!

He always thought it was Barnardos .

I got into family research after he had died so could only go on what I had at the time

Barnardos were willing to look for his records but his daughter had to request it as next of kin . They couldn't find him .

I did subsequently find it was a local home run by the Birmingham council and they did send me a brief in and out time scale for him which was all they found when looking .

So it's worth asking even if the person has since passed away

Barnardos now make a charge for a search , they didn't years ago when we made the enquiry

ditto to what Sylvia said - the only way to know who someone's parents were, or mother was, is to get the birth certificate.

if someone knew who their father was and had a relationship, they might give the name when they married

or they might name a stepfather, which is also useful information

but in your case, if he was a Barnardo's child, even if he named an adoptive or foster father, it would not help you

he was born to unmarried parents and not given his father's surname, so there will be no father named on his birth registration ... but the birth certificate is the essential document for info about his mother

I believe Barnardo's would disclose records to the person themself but not after their death to a family member, unfortunately, but you could enquire, as there could be info in those documents

there's no reason at all you would not get a result from the GRO ... you would apply with only the information in the index, and as long as you don't specify any information that is not in the index (like saying the father was Bushell), you'll get the certificate in short order

I would surmise that if his surname is Bushell, and the birth registration says mmn Bushell ..........

........... he is illegitimate, which fits with him being a Barnardo's boy.

That means you are unlikely to find a name for his father, and certainly not going to find a marriage

all you can do is buy his birth certificate to find his mother's full name. Then you might be able to find out whether she was single, divorced, married, widowed. Plus the address where he was born

and you might be able to trace her back with her full name.

Thanks all, I have all info after his birth, it is his parents I can't find...
I don't have a good track record with the GRO...had more refunds than results but seems that the only option. Thanks

I'm sure this an impossible task..I don't know where to go with finding the parents of Harold James Bushell born Hackney 1923? On FreeBMD his mothers maiden name is Bushell (no help). I know from the family that he was a Barnardos child and there was a home in Hackney at the time. I can't find any marriage for Bushell in Hackney up to 1923. I have very little hope in finding his parents but was hoping that someone would know a way forward (or backwards) and find his parents.
