It's possibly this record (Cost £3.50 to download):

Reference: ADM 188/103/94053
Description: Name Miller, Charles
Official Number: 94053
Place of Birth: Chatham, Kent
Date of Birth: 11 July 1859
Date: [1875-1876]
Held by: The National Archives, Kew
Legal status: Public Record

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D6625044

It looks like his record runs to 1898- which fits with the 1901 census where he states retired:

As you most probably know, you do now. Looking quickly I can't see anything on google to say either way as to what was required in 1906. You would have thought a marriage certificate would be required if Mother was registering it on her own but in a married name. If they were unmarried but both were to be on Certificate then both needed to attend the registration.

Louise

Louise Report 27 Nov 2015 13:21

does anyone Know did you have to have ID in 1906 ?

Louise, just out of a matter of interest who was the Informant on Maisie's Birth Certificate?

LondonBelle

LondonBelle Report 27 Nov 2015 13:05

Sorry, Prickly I should have put some punctuation in! I meant that I thought that Maisie had witnessed the Marriage and that her name had been mistranscribed as Luise so that it should have read Maisie Stevens Miller.

Louise

Louise Report 27 Nov 2015 12:56

just looked at Auntie Kaths marriage certificate i can confirrm that Maisie witnessed it, she did her Ms like that with line at front but i have never seen her sign or use the Stevens before.
Thanks

Yes I realise that Belle

You posted that you were wondering whether the second witness of the Marriage was in fact Maisie and has been mistranscribed as Kathleen. :-)

As far as I can see........the second witness is Lusie Stevens Miller.

LondonBelle

LondonBelle Report 27 Nov 2015 12:06

Prickly, Kathleen Vincent Miller was the Bride, Maisie's step sister.

Louise

Louise Report 27 Nov 2015 12:00

and the plot thickens......
the other side of the family come from Dover Maisies husband.
continuing thanks to all
i have been looking for leads, the birth certificate states Edith Stevens formerly Blackman but with no marriage cert. there is nothing to go on.
Did you need ID in 1906 when registering a birth?
I too was looking for a death in1906c that might explain adoption but have come up with nothing.
the name Maisie is not particularly common and i thought it may have been passed on but can not find a Maisie Blackman or Maisie Stevens i have tried various combinations with Crowley but to no avail. neither Arthur on Edith or Maisie are names linked to any descendants Rebbecca Crowley is 1of 9 siblings all in portsea.
thanks again everyone

PricklyHolly Report 27 Nov 2015 11:54

I can't see a witness "Kathleen" on the marriage that Chris posted?

I wonder who the witness.... Lusie "Stevens" Miller is?

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 27 Nov 2015 10:15

Probably not related as a too late for the birth of Maisie, but I did wonder what the rumours were!

Louise Report 26 Nov 2015 19:13

thank you everyone,i guess there is no way of ever knowing after years of speculating the whole portsmouh medway connection or the naval link i was really hoping the names on the full certificate where going to answer some questions.
i know Charles Miller was born in chatham wasChief Fisman Of Signals R N and registered blind at some point, 1 of five children all born Chatham his mother also from Chatham
married 1895 to Sarah jane Vincent 1of seven children born in Woolwich as were all but the second oldest who was born in Portsmouth. her mother came from Portsmouth
in1851 census Mary ann Heath is visiting from portsmouth
in1861 census Rebecca Crowley mother from portsmouth i
But Sarah Jane was not born until 1869.
and i have just really confused myself
i dont have access to census records at the moment and apparently my notes now dont make sense to me. ahhhhhh
