I can't see a marriage to a Mr. Charlton.

Since she reverted to her maiden surname in 1891, perhaps they never actually married.

There is a birth of an Emma Charlton registered Gateshead 1885. Bit of a gamble, but have you considered getting the cert?

Sounds to me as though Jane was useing the name of the father of Isabella whilst staying with her sister.

As she married William Benett under the name of Lovell I don't think anyone can find a marriage for her to a Mr Charlton.

Thanks all - I had come to the same conclusion, that she didn't marry Mr Charlton.

I may well buy the birth cert of one of the daughters, just to verify, as Kath suggests.

Interestingly, the daughter Emma, born as Charlton, also died as Charlton:

I had that information about Ernest., and his wife Emma's death in 1916.

Re Emma Charlton - bother! I've wasted money on sending for her birth cert!

However, if the Emma Charlton born Gateshead 1885 isn't Jane's daughter, then I can't find her birth, either as Charlton or as Lovell.

And I can't find her in 1911.

Have now looked at the 1901 for Emma Charlton with parents John and Mary, as mentioned by Chris above, and I see that she was born in Newcastle - and FreeBMD shows an Emma Charlton born Dec qr 1885 in Newcastle.

So the Emma Charlton born in Gateshead should be Jane's daughter after all. The birth cert will verify, I hope.

But what became of her after 1901, goodness knows.

Her father was Robert Charlton, plasterer.
Her mother Jane Charlton, formerly Lovell - so definitely married?

So if that's the case, it looks as if Jane was just saying she was married (as has already been suggested), and perhaps also Amelia was saying she was, in 1891, when maybe she and Robert were separated. By that time Jane had also separated from him, as she was calling herself Lovell again.

Wish I could find Amelia and son William in 1881, to see what she claims then.


As Robert was in the workhouse in 1881, it looks as if he'd left Amelia, or been kicked out.
