Young Emma's birth cert has now arrived.
Her father was Robert Charlton, plasterer.
Her mother Jane Charlton, formerly Lovell - so definitely married?
So I think this is her father in 1881, when Jane and older daughter Isabella (born London) were with Jane's sister Emma:-

Have now looked at the 1901 for Emma Charlton with parents John and Mary, as mentioned by Chris above, and I see that she was born in Newcastle - and FreeBMD shows an Emma Charlton born Dec qr 1885 in Newcastle.
So the Emma Charlton born in Gateshead should be Jane's daughter after all. The birth cert will verify, I hope.
But what became of her after 1901, goodness knows.

I had that information about Ernest., and his wife Emma's death in 1916.
Re Emma Charlton - bother! I've wasted money on sending for her birth cert!
However, if the Emma Charlton born Gateshead 1885 isn't Jane's daughter, then I can't find her birth, either as Charlton or as Lovell.
And I can't find her in 1911.

Thanks all - I had come to the same conclusion, that she didn't marry Mr Charlton.
I may well buy the birth cert of one of the daughters, just to verify, as Kath suggests.
Interestingly, the daughter Emma, born as Charlton, also died as Charlton:

As she married William Benett under the name of Lovell I don't think anyone can find a marriage for her to a Mr Charlton.

Sounds to me as though Jane was useing the name of the father of Isabella whilst staying with her sister.

There is a birth of an Emma Charlton registered Gateshead 1885. Bit of a gamble, but have you considered getting the cert?

I can't see a marriage to a Mr. Charlton.
Since she reverted to her maiden surname in 1891, perhaps they never actually married.

I wonder if anyone can find a marriage of Jane Lovell to a Mr Charlton, 1871 - 81, please?
I don't see it at all, but maybe a fresh pair of eyes can. It may be, of course, that she never married him - just had his children in 1878 and 1885.
