In retrospect...

I am a Llewellyn....

But tracing my family history (which is backed up by certificates) I have Llewellin, Lewellin, Lywellyn, Lywellin amongst others lol!

Personally I like my name spelt as I was baptised Llewellyn...only regret is that I was an only child....and none of my male cousins survived to have children..so I am likely to be the last of my Llewellyns :-(

You can click on Edit at the top of your first post and that will allow you to alter the heading. All that might be too many characters for a heading though. Don't delete the whole thread though.

I'd like to say thank you for your help. We now have a new memorial stone dedicated to our parents, grand parents and great grandparents.The two year old child turned out to be the granddaughter of our great grandparents.

I often use a 'wild card' e.g. something like Ll*n will bring up everything starting with Ll and ending in n so the spelling doesn't matter.

In this case of course that didn't work as the transcription of the name started with Slw.....

I then tried just the surname or just the first name or one or other and the place of birth or year of birth.

I think what eventually worked was looking for a Harriet b 1827 +/- a couple of years with a birth place of Forest of Dean then looking at all the surnames to see if anything stood out as being a possible for the one I wanted.

You really have to try every way you can think of to search.

Looking at the original record, it's easy to see why the transcription error was made, but I have to ask......how on earth did you go from Llewellyn to Slwyyn? I searched for hours yesterday and couldn't find anything and I can see why now. Also, if I want to do more research on the family, which version of the surname should I use?

That's interesting. I've checked the handwritten original on FreeBMD and the transcription is correct, but despite an extensive search I cannot find him on the census records 1861/71. Let us know what happens when you reorder. If that fails, try going direct to the register office.

Asking for help again. I ordered the three birth certificates I needed online from the GRO but I've had a reply today saying they can't trace John Llewellyn with the details I provided. I quoted volume 6b, page 473.

Thank you both. What an excellent evening's work. I've researched the paternal side of my family back to the 1700s because of a relatively unusual surname but I've been putting off researching the Llewelyns for obvious reasons. This has given me the push I needed.

yes, the birth certs are the only way

it wasn't until after 1969 that the deaths index began to show dates of birth (and even then, some older people's are not correct, given inaccurate family knowledge or memory)

it doesn't take long to get certificates, maybe you could place the order with that info to be supplied in a few days?
