obituary
Death of Mr. William J. Lucas. A well-known identity of the district, in the person of Mr. Wil liam John Lucas, aged 73 years, passed away at his home in Carr rington Lane, Bega, yesterday morning at 2.30, after a brief ill ness. Deceased left home for a load of wood shortly after noon on Saturday, going out past Mr. Curran's, on the river road: While gathering the wood he was seized with a violent pain and collapsed at about 2 o'clock. Two of Mr. W. Moran's children discovered him, and gave the alarm that a man was dying to Mr. Jim Dowling; who lost no time in getting a sulky and conveying deceased to his home. Dr. O'Reilly was summon ed and found the patient in a very low condition caused by gall stones and inflamation. There was no hope of recovery and he passed away at the time stated. Deceased was born in Lancashire, England, in 1847, and came to Australia at the age of fourteen with some horses (including Happy Joe') which were landed at Brisbane and he came on to Sydney. He was the first man to draw stone for the General Post Office building in Sydney. I am looking for a Joseph Lucas whose son John William Lucas was born 1843. All I know on John William Lucas' death certificate 1920, was that his father was Joseph, with no details of partners name.
