Just curious as no one else has contributed to the thread and I thought Maureen and yourself were working on the same family....

It's not my family, but I hope we're working on the same family

Are both you and Maureen working on the same family ???

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 13 Feb 2016 15:23

Eringobragh- the above is when Rev. John Pius Prendergast left Ireland to work with the poor folks in England.

From the information we've found, this is the likely order of James' children:

1 John 1835 Cork- 1889 Lewes, Sussex
2 Thomas James c1837 Cork- 1914 Worcestershire
3 Lucy 1841 Cork
4 William 1842 Cork- 1899 Western Australia
5 Maryanne (Second daughter) birth likely between 1843- 1847 (she married in 1867)
6 Susan- c1853 age taken from death record-unsure of which mother -her age seems to vary,
7 Francis c1863? (Although I don't see anything to verify this)
8 Mary Catherine born 1865 Cork- 1924 Gravesend Kent

So we're still a child short if your information re 9 children is correct.

Re Eringobragh's post. An article in the paper ( Dublin Daily Express - Friday 17 March 1911) reads that Thomas James Prendergast stated he was a first cousin, once removed, of the deceased Lady from Cork and he believed he was the next of kin. The deceased, Jane Murphy did have a brother, John Stansby Murphy, but he had travelled to Australia and hadn't been heard of since 1902.

See the post further up on Rev William Prendergast- he went to Australia

Maureen

Maureen Report 13 Feb 2016 12:28

I guess drinking ran in the family. All of the information that I had found for Susan Prendergast was arrests for drunkenness and prostitution. You have no idea how much I appreciate your efforts.

Do you think you can find something on the son William who was also a priest?

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 13 Feb 2016 12:19

OK, back to Thomas. I believe that the Thomas that went to prison in 1901 is also the same Thomas that I put up in the 1911 census in England.

This is him in 1911:

1911 England, Wales & Scotland Census Transcription
112 Alexandra Road Edgbaston, Edgbaston, Worcestershire, England
Thomas James Byrne Head Married Male Manager Mercantile Offices 34 1877 Dublin Rooters
Mary Ann Byrne Wife Married Female - 44 1867 Cork Ireland Resident
Thomas James Prendergast Father In Law Widower Male Gentleman Private Means 74 1837 Cork Ireland Resident
Mary Cecilia Byrne Daughter - Female - 10 1901 Newcastle Northumberland
Beatrice Prendergast Byrne Daughter - Female - 8 1903 Newcastle Northumberland
-----------------------------------------

Thomas's daughter Maryann (married name Byrne) was born in 1867 Cork. Her mother was Eliza Marshall. One of her godparents was Thomas Roche (possibly the same Thomas Roche that married Maryann Prendergast in 1867)
---------------------------------------

Other children of Thomas and Eliza Marshall were:

Name LUCY MARY PRENDERGAST bapt 1862 (sponsors were James Prendergast and Susan Haly)

Name KATE PRENDERGAST bapt 1869 (sponsors were Cors O'Connor and Janey Murphy)
---------------------------------------------------------

This is Thomas's marriage to Eliza (I believe his middle initial is mistranscribed)

Marriage:
Name Thomas T. Prendergast
Spouse's Name Eliza Marshall
Event Date 16 Jan 1862
Event Place St. Nicholas, Cork, Ire.
Father's Name James Prendergast <<<<<
Spouse's Father's Name William Marshall

So- this marriage seems to confirm that Thomas was a son of James.

Also wondered if this was your Rev. William Prendergast. I don't see any more mention of Rev. W V Prendergast after 1872 in the newspapers, so it might be worth checking.

Will Calendars
PRENDERGAST (The Reverend) William late of Newcastle, West Australia RCC died 3 July 1899 Probate granted at Perth, Western Australia 31 January 1901 to John J Horgan, Barrister and Solicitor. Resealed at Dublin. Effects in Ireland £250
---------------------------------------

There's a small notice to creditors in the The W.A. Record Saturday 2 March 1901:

In the goods of the Reverend William Prendergast late of Newcastle, in the State of Western Australia, Catholic Clergyman, deceased.
----------------------------------------------

The Express and Telegraph Friday 21 July 1899
FATHER PRENDERGAST

Dies in the West

The Rev. William Prendergast, who was once stationed in West Adelaide, and who afterwards had charge of the Catholic churches at Mount Barker' and Willunga, died at St. John's Hospital, Subiaco, West Australia, on Monday,- July 3.
-----------------------------------------------------

Obituary- which confirms he was from Cork:

Chronicle Saturday 29 July 1899

The Rev. William Prendergast, who was once stationed in West Adelaide, and who afterwards had charge of the Catholic churches at Mount Barker and Willunga, died at St. John's Hospital, Subiaco, West Australia, on Monday, July 3. He was a native of Cork, and studied for the priesthood in Rome, entering the Dominican order after he was ordained. He came to Adelaide nearly a quarter of a century ago, and had been in the West for eight years, during which period he labored at Southern Cross,, at Newcastle, and at Norbham. At the 'time of his death Father Prendergast had just completed his 57th year.
----------------------------------

The Obituary makes his birth around 1842 which fits with the baptism:

Baptism of WILLIAM PRENDERGAST of N/R on 31 January 1842
Name WILLIAM PRENDERGAST
Date of Birth N/R N/R N/R

Something else to look into- now, we know that Lucy married Thomas M'Donough in 1872 (Dublin), and that the newspaper report give her brothers as JP Prendergast and WV Prendergast (so definitely the correct family).

This is the information given from the original parish entry NOTE LUCY's MOTHER!!:

Husband: THOMAS MAC DONOUGH
Address NEWBROOK RATHFARNHAM
Father JOANNES MAC DONOUGH Mother: Not recorded

Wife: LUCIA PRENDERGAST
Address: 68 BRITAIN ST
Father: JACOBI PRENDERGAST Mother: ELIZABETH

Witness 2 MARY ARMSTRONG

AustinQ Report 12 Feb 2016 17:59

On Irishgenealogy there's a marriage that I thought was for your James but the marriage is dated 9th Feb 1878. This looks a more likely set of parents for Mary born 1879.

9th Feb 1879
Area - CORK & ROSS (RC) , Parish/Church/Congregation - TRACTON ABBEY
Names JAMES PRENDERGAST ELIZA MURPHY

So the newspaper was correct, and Mary Catherine was the youngest child of James.

I'll take another look at this tomorrow

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 12 Feb 2016 15:52

Jane Margaret Leader, <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Anastasia Dennehy,

Year 1886

Maureen Report 12 Feb 2016 15:33

somehow I lost part of the thread about Thomas. Maybe Thomas did go to jail for contempt of court. he was supposed to be the trustee of James' trust for his nine children. the note about nine children would tend to confirm that there was a child by Eliza Murphy. James will identifies his wife as "jane" at his death so there is another wife. I haven't found a marriage certificate for james and jane

AustinQ Report 12 Feb 2016 15:19
