His death is similarly hard (or impossible) to pinpoint.

He may not have died in Scotland.

If he did, there were 11 deaths of John Ewings (born 1883 +/- 1) in Scotland, 1901 - 1983.
Only one of those was in Edinburgh, and happened to be in Leith, but isn't necessarily him:

1956 EWING JOHN M 73 LEITH EDINBURGH CITY/MIDLOTHIAN 685/08 0749

You would have to spend credits on SP to see the image, to find out any other details.

ScotlandsPeople won't help much with his marriage (if any).
It's not possible to factor in parents' names in the search, and search results don't show parents' names, unless you spend more credits looking at the image of each cert.

If he married at all, and if he did so in Leith, there are two possibilities 1901-40.
The 1906 one seems more likely, as there's been no middle name mentioned in any of the records posted so far:
