I would be very grateful if someone with a sub to FMP could have a look at the 10 or so Edith Butlers (with no middle names) who were born in 1886 and who are on the 1939 register.
The one I'm looking for was born 14/02/1886, and had no middle name. I don't think she ever married.
She's not the one in Chatham ( I know because I bought the Chatham one's death cert) but could be any of the others. Or she might be none of them, as it's possible she was in Scotland at the time. She was born and brought up in Oxfordshire, but I know she frequently visited relatives in Edinburgh during the 1920's -30's - possibly even lived there - I don't know.
I have no idea when or where she died, despite much searching. I have all the census records for her, and I know all about her parents, siblings, and ancestors, so please don't waste your time looking for any of that.
I'll be delighted if you can find her in 1939!

Hi AG
There is no one with that name and DOB on the 1939 register
Maybe you're right, she could have been in Scotland

None of the Edith's without middle names was born on that date.
The only one with a birthday on 14th February was born in 1887 and has the middle initial E. and is married. She is in Newtown Road Southhampton but probably not "your Edith".

Yes, malyon, that's her birth.
As I said, I know all about her up to and including the 1911 census. (No, I didn't specifically say I had her birth record, but I do. That's how I know her DOB.)
Thanks for looking.

Gee, thanks! I'm pretty sure she never married - at least, there's never been any mention of that in family stories - but you never know.
She was quite a gal, was "naughty Auntie Edie", as her nieces and their parents called her. She dressed smartly, and enjoyed going to the races at Musselburgh with gentlemen!

Oops - I clicked answered before refreshing the page, so I didn't notice your post, Shirley.
Unfortunately all those who knew her personally are now deceased. She was certainly in Edinburgh frequently in the 1920's and 30's, as her nieces (my mother and aunts) remembered her, and they would have been in their teens in the 30's.
But during my own teens, I don't remember hearing her talked of as still being around (although, equally, nobody ever actually said she was dead, as far as I can remember) . So I'm assuming she died in the 1940's or 50's. Or maybe early 60's.
There's no sign of a marriage or death on ScotlandsPeople, and I haven't found any that checks out in England/Wales.
There are a lot of travel records for Edith Butlers, but none with enough detail to identify if she was one of them, and I'm not aware of anyone ever saying she had gone abroad.
There are no family photos of her, which might have helped with dates.

As mentioned, she is not the Edith Butler who died in Chatham in 1948.
She is also not the Edith Butler who died in Kenilworth (Warwick) in 1924, nor the one who died East Glamorgan 1964.
All of those were married women.
I don't think she'll be the Witney one, Shirley, as I would have remembered hearing of her death if it was as late as 1973.

As it's Edith's birthday tomorrow, and as her name has come up elsewhere on the boards this week , I'm bumping this up just in case anyone fancies another trawl of the records, though I don't really expect anything else to come to light until the 1921 census is released.
Personally, I think she was probably in Scotland in 1939, in which case we won't find her then. I would need to know her date of death to be able to request a record from the Scottish 1939 register, but can't find that.
To recap, She was born in Bodicote (aka Boddicott) Oxfordshire on 14/02/1886. No middle name. Malyon posted the 1901 census above, also her birth record, but I have all the censuses for her, as well as all info re her parents, siblings, ancestors, etc. In 1911 she was living in Bicester, Oxon, with her cousin Walter Allen and his family.
Her sister and brother, with their spouses and children, as well as a married aunt, were living in Edinburgh from the late 1890's onwards, so she may well have lived there too.

Any hint from family that she could have moved in with a chap and taken his name without marrying him (if he was already married).? It looks as if you have left no stone unturned. What about Ireland?
