Wow! This is so brilliant! I wasn't sure anything could be found as he had a relatively common name in London. Thank you so much!

I guess I might be able to find George's birth certificate with parents George and Elizabeth?

I don't know Lodon very well but according to Wikipedia: Marylebone is an affluent inner-city area of central London, England, located within the City of Westminster.

That still seems to add up..

But if he's the son of George and Elizabeth then, unless he's listed on the census twice, surely this is him in 1871 (from the census I put up on the previous page)?

This is really helpful! I'm taking over Dad's research but am quite new to this myself. :-) Thank you again!

Please can you tell me where I can buy the birth certificates that AustinQ kindly found the baptisms for? I would like to order all of my Grandfather's siblings certificates to get a little bit more information about George James.

Please do you know how I can know which George James is the right one on the 1871 Census? I don't want to be chasing the wrong ancestors. The area is right but how can it be narrowed down?

Thanks Safc- I didn't think it was correct, but was worried that Hannah had taken the 1861 on page 1 as the correct one when she mentioned parents being George and Elizabeth.

So, Hannah- the 1861 & 1871 census for George with parents, Elizabeth and George, are incorrect.

Once you've found the births in the indexes here:
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
make a note of the vol and page numbers

You can then order birth certificates online here (cost £9.25):

This is a little weird too in 1901 George's wife Fanny is listed as a widow, but in 1911 she is listed as married to William Shroll for 18 years. Looking at the marriage indexes they were actually married 1894!

Thank you AustinQ! I remember Dad mentioning that Fanny married again but I didn't know to whom. I'll see if I can get more details on this lead too, thank you!

Just looked this up on the 1851 Census and wondered if this is a young George James Davies and family - what do you think?

That's interesting, thank you, AustinQ.

Just wonder if it's possible to find the birth and parents of my George James?

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 18 Apr 2016 10:11

There are that many George Davis/ Davies in the Middlesex area that it's going to be tough!

Do you have access to Ancestry?

Just looking at the Witnesses for his marriage, a Bobbies999 has a DAVIS FAMILY tree with Harry Woods and Sarah C Lungley in. It is a private tree, but it might be worth sending them a message to see if they have info on your George?

Marriage:

Yes, it is very tough. I think that's why my Dad gave up! I've just joined Ancestry so have sent Bobbies999 a message and copy of George James' marriage with the witness names included. I'll post up his reply if and when I get one.

I guess the witnesses could be friends but maybe related.

Thanks again!

Hannah Report 19 Apr 2016 13:01

Just heard back from Bobbies999 The Davis Family Tree

"Unfortunately it isn't the same family. The spelling for my research name is definitely Davis and there are no links that I've found with Walworth. My Sara Clara was was never a 'Wood'. Any way good luck with your research."

If George James Davies/Davis was born about 1847, then I should expect him to be on the 1851 census as a child with his family - possibly in the same Westminster area of London.
