Yes, I fully appreciate this. (My maiden name Northmore had many variations, Narramore, as one). Several years ago we had a Northmore-Narramore reunion in Plymouth Uk. I was amazed at the number of people who arrived from outside UK. Australia, New Zealand, USA.

Spelling wasn't standardised, and many people were illiterate.
I know Robert Burns wasn't, but there could still have been several variations of the name.

My father's ancestors spelled their name (or had it spelled at the whim of census enumerators and registrars/parish clerks) in many different ways - lateral thinking required in tracing them!

Even the first name of one of them (Silas) was written as Silence in one census - misheard or mis-spelled by the enumerator.

I could only do it by googling, and reading all that I could find on him ................ experts will have dug deeply into his family, and I'm sure that the answer will be online or in one of the books written about him.

I'm not sure that we have an expert on Rabbie Burns on here :-)

the records can be trusted, but please be very careful if you look at member-submitted genealogies. I'm sure you are aware that many of those contain information made to fit known facts, whether true or not :-)


ArgyllGran has already suggested that you Google for Burns family trees .... and has indeed given you the link to a Burness tree.

Again, I would treat the information with caution until you are sure that it is documented.

If they are found by Googling, the odds are that you can access them for free .......... if not, then you can come back and ask if anyone has a subscription to the site concerned. The only that I know will be difficult is Scotland's People as that is a pay by credit site not a subscription site ........... and members do not usually have credits to spare.


Only you will know whether the information found on any of the sites I've mentioned fit with what you want to find out.

Only managed to obtain name of Margaret Burness at the moment from my relation (we think Margaret was descendant of Robert Burns brother) and children's names. I note there is a Burns Burness tree but do not know any other definite names as yet. I really appreciate any assistance. Thank you.

This tree suggests both grandfathers had multiple siblings.
So it would be a long search from that point of view alone.

Such old records are patchy, and don't give much detail, so it's often impossible to know if, say, a married couple are the ones you're looking for or not, with often no parents' names given.

Robbie Burns was born 1759, which means his grandfather was born around 1700 .......... and I gather that records are not that good in Scotland for that period.

I am keen to research Robbie Burns grandfather's brother's family. Not sure whether on the paternal or maternal side.....however the name MITCHELL is the link I am looking for from then, to date. Is this a tough one?
