Curious when Mary Spooner died - at 42 she was left with 2 kids under 4 and a 11yo. Not sure when Maggie, Vi and Peter came out to Australia. On a visit to the UK in the 90's i did manage to catch up with a relative in Sheffield and relying on memory now but i think there was some ill-feeling that the kids had gone.

I met my Aunty Ev in Sydney in Balmain about 35 years ago. I thought she was about 90, so that fits, just a bit less than 90. She was very short, similar to Aunty Maggie, whereas Aunty Vi and Nana were much taller. Most surprising to me is that i was in my late teens with a couple of mates (doing a 'roadie' exploring parts of Australia) and while i knew she was blind and had called to say we would be coming some weeks before, we were warmly welcomed in for a cup of tea. I nearly had kittens when she lit the gas stove up and put her hand over the flames to see if it was on! She lived alone and seemed happy and independent and a good lesson to us young blokes with great admiration for her. Also somewhere i have seen a photo of her with my Uncle during WW2 when he was in Port.

thank you all, that's fantastic and lots of detail for me to digest and record. I love when you can piece together the story from the records - more than words you try to walk in their shoes.

As i worked down your detail Holly, i am glad that Mabel and Eveline turned up in 1911 - Mabel looks like she was at grandparents house but I wondered why she was 'visitor' rather than grand-daughter. Perhaps that was a convention to say she didn't usually live there.

Can't wait to get on Google street view and see if i can check out some of these addresses. Have looked at Bolehill Road before.

Is Cow Keeper the same as dairyman? And what is a Wine Drawer? I noticed the word Yoeman - same as Yeoman?

yeo·man (yo'm?n)
n.
1.
a. An attendant, servant, or lesser official in a royal or noble household.
b. A yeoman of the guard.
2. A petty officer performing chiefly clerical duties in the US Navy.
3. An assistant or other subordinate, as of a sheriff.
4. A diligent, dependable worker.
5. A farmer who cultivates his own land, especially a member of a former class of small freeholders in England.
[Middle English yeman, yoman, perhaps contraction of yong man, young man (yong, young; see young + man, man; see man), or from Old English *geaman (from or akin to Old Frisian gaman, villager : ga, region, district + man, man; see man- in Indo-European roots).]

Does this refer to the bit that says he had 12 acres? ie. a small freeholder?

And just saw the last post as if you were reading my mind as to my next question. I had wondered how George jnr died and there it is in detail.

Did you know if you type out a big long message with lots of details and take too long that it completely wipes it all out!! Sorry if this is a repeat, but i did try and do a search but because it is only a single word search, Spooner produces nearly 500 matches - it seems strange to me that there is not a full name search for the forum part. And i did find advanced search but after 10 minutes not it is telling me it is still compiling results and suggests it can't handle a full name? I also tried George Henry Spooner in a person search and got zero matches and yet through the quick family finder it shows me George Henry. But i can't use that any further because it only works if you were born in an English county and neither will it take your first ancestor that was. Getting very frustrated with this site!

On a more positive note, I am looking for ancestors on my grandmother Beatrice Spooner's side. I have fond memories of her and her sisters Maggie and Vi. I know she married my Grandfather during WW1 when he worked as a munitions worker using his building skills, he was unfit for a soldier. He was Leslie Moore Baulderstone and his service records are available (for free!) at the australian war service records site and there is a letter in there where he has written to ask if he can bring his new wife home with him on the same ship.

I know that they lived only doors apart from the marriage certificate and Henry was in the building trades also and beatrice was the postal clerk, so lots of chances for them to meet. But apart from that i know nothing of the Spooner family history.

Any help appreciated. I only have a short membership because it was the only way to respond and help someone with history on the Baulderstone family side. But i also thought a good chance to try out a site to see if this would be the one to build my tree on, but so far it is just not working well for me. Even my 50 credits seem pretty useless without any sort of preview function, you have know idea if you are paying for a record that is correct or not. If they can fix these sort of simple things then you never know. I am always keen to help anyone
