For what it's worth (probably not much), Ancestry suggests that the Elza Licis, whose death in 1978 Maddie posted , is the same person as the Elsa who married James.

Hi Maddie, thank you! This looks very promising, possible she did go to USA and the dates would co-incide with this. The electoral rolls in London also would tie in, gives me something to look into.

They had no children, it was my uncle's 2nd marriage, I think it was actually 1947 they married, her name at marriage was listed as Elsa A Licis (alternative spelling Elza) They married in Coventry, UK.
My mum remembered her vaguely as having expensive clothes from USA so possible links to USA.
Not much information unfortunately, we only have a photo of her but was hoping to try and find out something about her.

There is no death in the index up to 2007 for Elsa Hartshorne.

There is also no marriage in the index for James Hartshorne to Elsa. Did they not marry in England?
