Thanks safc.

If her father was James then it looks like she fits the 1875 one with parents James & Mary ??

She probably 'up'd her age a bit' as he was so much older than her - It often happened.

Does it give James' occupation ?

"Wonder why they used her maiden name for the children in the workhouse"

If the children were born before their mother married John Scutt, technically they were Sadlers.
They may have been John's children but on the other hand someone else may have been their father.

In the workhouse.
William and Charles were born before Emma married and their births were registered as Sadler (Petworth RD). I can't find a suitable registration for Frederick under Sadler or Scutt. He may have been presumed to be Sadler along with his "Brothers" but maybe his Father was John Scutt (reason for the marriage?) as per the tillington.net reference posted earlier.

Here it also says his parents had 5 other children
Marjorie
John - if this is the child that died, perhaps Fred didn't know/remember him. Can't find a definitive birth/death
James
Henry
George
Grace

That would account for the 9 born (Although not necessarily to the marriage!) and one death shown on the 1911 census. Though where William and George are in 1911 ??

Flippin' Eck Folks , back home you have helped to establish Emma Jane Sadler and her poor family, I wondered if John Scutt could have been in the army and away lots that is why they never married earlier ? or she had children and he took the elder one's on as his own by the 1911 census....lots for me to go through tonight...Once again your kindness is out standing.x

Just for information, my husband has a friend, surname Scutt, who was born in Sussex. I'll email him and see if he knows anything.

Bit of an update : Looks like Emma's father who was a gamekeeper died in 1881 and the family seemed to go into decline, maybe he was bread winner and her John might not have been skilled to keep roof over their head after he came out of army...x

Spoke to my husband's Scutt friend who says he doesn't recognise any of the names. He said there were a number of Scutts in Sussex ... his father was one of 22.
Good luck.
