The 1911 census shows 6 children at home. They are living in 3 rooms

The original says 9 children born, 8 still living 1 has died. All children are named (useful) but -

Crossed out are William aged 18 b Petworth and also George aged 3 b Chichester and also John - there are no age details given for him and there is also a X against his name in the children who have died column (listed between Marjorie and James).

On the 1901 census there is a William, Charles and Frederick Sadler (who become Scutt on the 1911 census?) living in what seems to be an institution of some kind.

EDIT - yes, going back on the images it is a Workhouse in New Shoreham.

Thank you ladies you have opened a door for me , i will check out the 1901 census to see if any of their children are with them as looks like they may have been homeless when that one taken and that will help pin it down.

Last name SADLER
Birth year 1872
Birth quarter 1
Registration month -
Mother's last name -
District PETWORTH
County Sussex
Country England
Volume 2B

Perhaps she was given her middle name after her mother when she was christened??

If you buy John and Emma Jane's marriage certificate it should name her father which will help make sure you follow the correct line.

Are you sure about her birth date?

There was one born in 1872 but another in 1875 who seems to fit the area better?

This would seem to be the 1875 one?

I think he might have been a foot soldier in the 35th Foot between 1881-1891 or even later i wonder if she got preggers and he came back after baby born and married her they look a poor family as he is a Farm Lab on 1911 but no sign of him on 1901 :-(

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 4 Sep 2016 11:13

Yes, you would have to buy the birth certificate for one of the children to be sure, but see my post above - there is a child with the surname Sadler so the marriage seems right.

Actually, looking at the image for the 1911 census there is a son whose name is crossed out but he is called William Sadler so it looks like the above marriage is the correct one.

This is a possible birth for the child on the 1911 census called Grace (possibly her middle name):-

First name(s) FRANCES GRACE
Last name SCUTT
Birth year 1910
Birth quarter 1
Registration month -
Mother's last name -
District PETWORTH
County Sussex
Country England
Volume 2B
Page 278

The registration district is where they were living in 1911. The certificate would give her mother's maiden name.

JOHN SCUTT b. 1859 in Bury Sussex – d 1944 in Sussex
Married around 1895 to:
Emma Jane? b.1872 Sussex – d.1937 Sussex

They had 9 children I think,

CHARLES - FREDERICK - MARJORIE - JAMES - JOHN - HENRY - FRANCES GRACE – GEORGE

They are on the 1911 Census living at Bigenon Farm Cottage Petworth Sussex, but only found Emma and Marjorie on 1901 as paupers (I think) I am trying to find out Emma Jane’s maiden name so I can follow her line have tried FreeBMD any help would be appreciated.
