Andrew, this is the FMP transcript of the 1851 and looking at the image I think he's a Clogg maker

The 1841 census posted by Malyon shows a Thomas born 1835 so the age is a few years out for the Thomas who was an optician in 1871.

For easier reading, here is the FMP version of the 1841 census

1841 England, Wales & Scotland Census Transcription
Moland Street, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England

John Barnaclough Male 49 1792 Warwickshire, England
Mary Barnaclough Female 47 1794 Warwickshire, England
Creswell Barnaclough Male 17 1824 Warwickshire, England
James Barnaclough Male 14 1827 Warwickshire, England
Charles Barnaclough Male 12 1829 Warwickshire, England
William Barnaclough Male 8 1833 Warwickshire, England
Thomas Barnaclough Male 6 1835 Warwickshire, England

I think the above is the same Thomas Andrew posted the 1851 census for.

Irene ................

for future reference, please do NOT use the tick on GR.

It does not mean that you have seen a posting, or that a posting si the one tow hich you have referred, but that you need no further help.

Thus most helpers will ot again look at the thread.

Unfortunately, it is a quirk of GR that the tick cannot be removed.

All you can do is to edit the title to add something like ".......... help still needed"

where did you get this information?

I cannot find a birth registration for a Charles Baraclough or Barraclough in Birmingham between 1870 and 1874

I cannot find a marriage for a Thomas Baraclough / Barraclough to an Emma anywhere in England between 1860 and 1880

As for why they are not on the census returns ..............

could be they emigrated.

According to the new GRO Index, the Charles Baraclough who died in 1880 was aged 11 months (the index has not yet worked out how to distinguish between yrs and months!). But this is the same reference that safc posted above.
