Zoe ............

who knows why anyone lied on marriage certificates, or on censuses.

The usual reasons are because they were underage and so would ahve needed parental permission, or one spouse was older than the other; or thet just ddi lie.

The latter is what my own maternal grandparents did in 1902 .......... they each added a couple of years to their ages, but that still made them both under 21 at the time, AND the parents and siblings were present at the marriage. So ............ why???????

The easy answer to Thomas Beddow and Henrietta is that he was so much older than she was, and so it would "look better" if he was closer to her age ............... therefore he lost about 12-15 years in age on his marriage.

Then he "gained" a few years by 1901, so he was older, but still quite close in age.

By 1911, he probably couldn't hide the fact that he was a lot older than Henrietta!

He probably had been married before ............ but you'd need to buy marriage certificates etc to prove that it was the same guy. Thomas Beddows is not an unusual name, and you need to sort out where he was born.

Also a henrietta Beddow died in 1920 and also a Thomas Beddow three months later. They were buried in the same grave in Whitchurch but he was apparently 75 when he died and her 52. Non of the dates add up to the censuses

Ah OK. Why would someone lie? I had wondered if he had been married before as I have found a Thomas Beddow married to a Christina Beddow. The 1891 census shows they are living in Whitchurch.

Thank you. I don't have Ediths birth certificate. What's odd is that both censuses (1911 and 1901) have different ages for Thomas. I not sure if Henrietta married him in a hurry as it was so close to Edith being born. I cannot work out which birth year is correct and it is showing him to have been born in two different places.

For clarity .......

John Beddow age 6 in 1901 is the same person as Thomas Beddow, age 16 in 1911

BEDDOW, JOHN THOMAS HALL
GRO Reference: 1895 J Quarter in WHITCHURCH Volume 06A Page 729

Note also that Thomas Beddow apparently lied on his marriage to Henrietta.

He said he was 28, while Henrietta was age 20.

In fact, he was between 10 and 20 years older than Henrietta according to the later censuses.

Not an unusual situation when one spouse was much older than the other :-)

Hi
I am getting really stuck and need some help if possible. My 2xs great grandfather was called Thomas Beddow and his wife was Henrietta Hall. I am trying to work out when he was born, died and who his parents were. My great grandmother was Edith Mabel Beddow. I think he was born in 1852 maybe and she was born in 1872. They lived in Whitchurch in Shropshire. I have found two census's but they both have different birth places for him and different ages but all of the family names are the same.
I'm so confused and would love to find out more about him if possible.
Help!
