Ferrand Street was listed in the 1891 census:

At 41 were Arthur Fisher and family and John Morriss and family.

Sorry I have had a lot going on here at home.

Anna my husbads gran wasn't born until July 1892
even so I don't think there is any connection with your Grandfather apart they all lived in the same building.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 11 May 2017 16:48

41 Ferrand Street was a tenement with several households, so they were probably just neighbours.

In 1891, there were three households listed at No 41:
Edward Garland & family; George Pearce & family; Joseph J Skelton & family

EDIT:

No, sorry - that was in 1901!

Ferrand Street doesn't seem to feature in 1891 census.

My grandfather, Albert Edward Cridland, was also resident at 41 Farrand Street, Bermondsey on 17th April 1892 when he married Louisa Mary Salter, also of that address. I wonder if either of them are connected with your Eliza Ball or her family.

Staff could have lived in at an embassy

BUT, she might not have been there in 1911 ................ she might have been working elsewhere as a servant and gaining experience and training that would allow her to get a position as cook (or cook's helper).

That means that she could very well be one of the ones found on the 1911 working as General Servant ........... that means doing housework, helping the mistress cook (OR doing all the cooking), etc etc.

It this Embassy thing that is bothering me, was it true or one of those stories that got embroidered along the way.

Would such staff have lived-in at an embassy?
Would an embassy be obliged to complete the census?

Eliza Ball Servant - Female General Servant 18 1893 Bermondsey

McAlp

McAlp Report 23 Jan 2017 19:19

I am trying to research my husband's grandmother.

Name: Eliza Ball (no middle name)
DoB: July 14, 1892 (exact)
Birth address: 41 Ferrand Street, Bermondsey
Father: George John Ball
Mother: Eliza Ball nee Wright
Address in 1901 (age 8): 22 Riles Road, West Ham, Plaistow

I cannot find her in the 1911 census and I am wondering if there is a clue in the following. My husband recalls his father mentioning that she had been a cook in the Russian embassy in London.

When the 1911 census came about she would have been 18 going on 19. At that age she may have been only a kitchen maid and developed into a cook later.

Would such staff have lived-in at an embassy?
Would an embassy be obliged to complete the census?

She married in 1918 and we have full documentation from that time.
But I don't know where to look for the missing years, any suggestions ?
Thanks Ann
