Chris were you asking me how I found them in fmp for 1861?

That was the initial problem, I couldn't find them. PricklyHolly kindly found them on Ancestry and using the numbers Piece: 290 Folio: 39 Page Number: 53 I entered these and only these details in fmp.

This brings up just 1 entry for Rachel Simmons I then viewed her image which then shows the whole page including The Hambergers.

I haven't got a clue what they are transcribed as in fmp if they are at all.

Thanks for the replies. The actual family I am looking for are called Hanenberger

This is them in 1881
6 Leman Street, Red Lion Yard, London
HEAD HENRY HANENBERGER 51 FUR SKIN DYER BORN GERMANY,
wife Catherine 47 born Germany,
daughter Elizabeth Hanenberger 19 born Middlesex, unemployed domestic servant,
son John Hanenberger 17 born Germany cabinet maker,
son Peter Hanenberger 12 born Middlesex,
daughter Margaret Hanenberger 9 born Middlesex,
son Fredy Hanenberger 6 born Middlesex.

I cannot find them in 1871, the original post querying 1861 census was for me to confirm or rule that family out. Which I still cannot do.

One of the problems is that I do not believe they do appear later.
(Sorry posted same time as above post)

It's probably the best transcription you'll get.
The H at the beginning of the name is the same as the one in Head.
There is a feint upward stroke for the b.
The r's are the same as in Catherine. Similarly the e's.

Don't get too hung up on the spelling if it changes later on; they're often spelt phonetically if the family is illiterate. In this case, the enumerator might have had to cope with a strong accent or someone who couldn't speak English.

Thanks that is them.

I have now found them in findmypast by using the piece/folio/page number, not sure what they are transcribed under.

Did you look at the image? In your opinion does the surname actually say Hamberger? To me it is so unclear.

Hello

I have the details of a search I found in Ancestry some 10 years ago on the 1861 census but stupidly I did not write down the piece / folio / page number etc.

Now when trying to find the family in Findmypast I cannot.

Can somebody look them up in Ancestry and let me know the details, so that I can then find them in Findmypast.

The family are:

Living 2 New Street, Mile End Old Town, Whitechapel. He is a musician?

Henry Hamberger abt 1826 Germany Head
Catherine Hamberger abt 1834 Germany Wife
Henry Hamberger abt 1858 Germany Son
Catherine Hamberger abt 1860 Germany Daughter

Thank you

John
