One major tool thru to the 1970s is the GRO index via:
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

This has recently been supplemented with:
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp
Order Certificates Online and search the GRO historic birth and death indexes [historic = thru 1915].
You have to rego first - it's free.
This gives the mum's maiden surname pre-1912, and the age at death pre-1866.

You should also supplement this with the local index, if one is available - see:

Of interest is

for Gloucs (excluding the Bristol area) and also

for Wilts (excluding Swindon).

The local offices has to organize their certs differently from the GRO, so they use a difft ref.
This ref gives the subdistrict a B or D was rego'ed in, and the church/rego office that had the official marr register.
Usually this info is given in the ref in code. Also, usually the last element in a local marr ref is an entry #, not a page #, so one knows who wed whom pre-1912.

Index coverage on home page gives options, but no links, so it's a bother to use them.
By comparison, South Tyneside has a "Marriage Indexes" link, which decodes the reference on a search hit like:

South Tyneside decodes the registration subdistrict on the hit for Bs and Ds
WiltsBMD decodes the church code (as well as B/D subdistrict) on the hit

A number of sub-districts have, at various periods, made up the Tynemouth Registration District over the years. These are:
Tynemouth, Tynemouth First, Tynemouth Second, Wallsend, Earsdon, Whitley
plus Blyth and Cramlington (now held at Morpeth) and Longbenton (now held at Newcastle).

So it's easy to guess code E stands for Earsdon.(E4 indicates it's the 4th Earsdon birth register).

Failure to rego a birth carried no penalty until 1875, so sometimes you trally have to rely more on the census.
Even after 1875, all the law required was that you rego the birth within 6 wks, not that you name the child.
