Have you got the marriage certificate so that you know who his father was, and possibly his age?

Did they divorce, and were any financial arrangements made for his daughter?

Was he in Wales before he was in the army, as this seems to say they did not leave USA until September 24th:

Interesting co-incidence of names:

Hi Rachel, How do you know he was in 79TH Group?

There is a John W Ranson listed in 79th photo shown he was a LT Col at Duxford Air base.May 1943-Feb 1944

There was a John W Ranson in US died 2009.a WW2 Veteran, he was born 1918 appears on census.

As Patchem suggests you should get the marriage cert to show his age and fathers name.

Marriage to Gladys Fowler took place Oct Q 1942

The marriage in 1942 was of John Ranson, not John W Ranson.

I think if he had been a Lt Col then this fact would have been known about him, which was why I said about a co-incidence of names.

This is the marriage, and you can apply for the certificate from the GRO - £9.25, and you have the reference numbers:

Marriages Dec 1942
Fowler Gladys Ranson Pontypool 11a 325
Ranson John Fowler Pontypool 11a 325
